I recently recieved a email from another member about synth programming etc.
I thought it would be a good idea to share it with everyone as it can be very helpfull.

All synths are the same, exept some have better presets, you can make the same sounds with any synth you just need to put the time and effort into it.
The best thing i can advise is to try and find out about Synth programming courses where you live as synth programming can be very complicated, but ill try and desribe in short anyway,
All synths are made from using different sine waves layered over eachother. First of all you need to take 1 sine wave, adjust the LFO so that it matches your BPM, then add another (this one doesnt have to oscilate at the tunes BPM, this one is the one that will give you the sound), play around with this untill you have a sound you like (This is a basic synth sound, will probably sound like a Moog synth!!), To make it more intresting keep adding and messing around with the sine waves untill you come up with a sound you like. Most synths (Absynth, FM7 etc) will only allow up to 3/4 sine waves to be used, but if you buy a specific synth creation tool, then you can use infinate amount of sines. I hope this isnt to confusing for you. Also with each sine waves, i like to add an effect to it e.g Flanger or Phaser, or sometimes a little reverb, this way it gives the synth more depth.
After playing around with eveything for a while you will come up with a sound that you like, also the best thing about it is that you have created it and you know that no one in the would will have it!!!
Never give up, keep trying to make different sounds and eventually one day you will come up with a specific sound that you like, most artisits can spend years perfecting there own individual synth sound! As once you have created it you can mess about with it and use it again and again in different tunes.
I hope this helps.

I would rather divide them into additive, subtractive, granular, physical modeling, wave terrain, etc.. You don't have to start with some waveform and than doing stuff to it. Computers can do more than just that you know.

the presets were made y people that know what sounds sonicly good, and what the synth is capable of (the pro ones, synthedit, naw) so it's not bad using one of the 100 or so presets taht come with soft synths now, or any synth.
but saying that, most of the presets are made to sound good, but usually solo, and would overdub more sounds in a track, and you have to cut the fat on most any preset so it fits.
i don't have time to mkae up my own wacky out there synth, but usually presets do halph the work.
saying that, you still have to know how to use synths and what happens when you change it, so you can GET the sound you're after, regardless of presets or not. this is pruly just trial & error, no matter how much you study, the sound is something you ahve to discover. so, good synths come with experiance. go out there and fuck it up!

I very rarely use synths to be honest, I made some shapes in soundforge and I use them most of the time.
If I was to do something like the method above I'd open up a couple of sine waves, loop them and send each one to a different mixer channel. Then you're free to do anything you want to each channel, add whatever fx you want etc etc.
You get loads more control over the overall sound like this than you do with most synths in my opinion. Not all synths, some are awesome, just most of them.

I tweak presets and and manually "copy" patches to get more insight as to how the sound is created.
