I'd like to know what soundcard peaple are using.
I'm thinkin of replace my terratek DMX 6 fire soundcard. It has very much noise when you record, and has bad quality. It is a little bit broken and It's impossible to fix it.
I'd like to have a soundcard with more than 8 XLR inputs with goodsounding mic-preamps, midi, and outputs for two headphones, two moniters, and one output to be able to have hardware fx. It should sound very good to. I don't know but there must be differencis in sound of different souncards? It should cost around 500 €, is this possible?

M-Audio Audiophile 24/96
1 in 1 out
MIDI in/out
SPDIF in/out
Its a nice sound card, works a charm but I wish it had couple more inputs.

i use an audiowerk8 + soundblaster live (for the midi-stuff), works awesome with logic.
If you wanna have 8xlr's + preamps,... 500€ is gonna be a tight call.
A sure bet would be the MOTU's then.
Or use a workaround solution with a small mixer (4 stereo + 4 mono + some send/return fx and subgroups) and a good but affordable soundcard.

same here....and its doing just fine......plus you can now get them for about £50 or £60........at the end of the day you dont need much more if your doing all your mixing within the computer.....and youll find if go to many studios now theres often only two channels being used on a desk......

I use the same, and it does wonders, I agree with more inputs, but they have some higher models with many many more inputs, someday when I have the money I plan on upgrading.

I have an audigy 2 platinum. It's great for gaming, listening, recording and laying out tunes. The only disadvantage is that the frequency response curve is not perfect for mastering tunes on it (a typical soundblaster issue).

I have an Echo Mia which I don't use a lot anymore since I got an Edirol UA-101
I was going to get the firewire version, but since that's not very compatible with linux I got this one (and also because there was this very nice ebay opportunity)
It's 10 in - 10 out, but only 2 mic pre amps though. But that's enough for me. Very versatile thingie, I really like the monitor functions. And to me it sounds very good.
Motu indeed should be a good (but expensive) bet, but I once heard that their Windows drivers are not very stable? Dunno if it's true though, used one once, but that was on a powerbook, and it worked like a charm.

I have a creamware Luna II, sound-quality is excellent but the drivers have given me gray hairs.
My job is selling sound cards so it would be strange if I couldn't give you some advice (I'm also the guy fixing customer's computers if they fuck them up). I'd say either MOTU or Presonus, preamps are good and we've had very few complaints at work. I think Presonus has the best pre-amps but their new series is fairly new on the market which means it's hard to tell if there are any problems with them. Probably not tho...Presonus has a reputation for making quality stuff.
Be aware that 8 XLRs with good pre-amps on a soundcard is going to cost you...
Good luck

mbox. i really like the focusrite preamps and the possibillity to put inserts on your inputs . Not good for use with live bands coz' it only has two analog inputs . the sensitivity of the record input pods is shit.
but the overall sound is really good. it's dedicated asio-drivers have never failed me.and it's very practical (portable, small handy)
there are a whole bundle of soundcards on the market so you can choose wich one you need. I chose an mbox coz i mostly make electronical music and therefore don't need a lot of in's (and i'm in love with pt-editing ) . i'm saving up slowly now for more inputs
,coz' i'd like to record some small demo's and stuff. evolving as a producer so my soundcard evolves with me
