look man its up to you obviously. but i wouldnt bother!!!!! it hasnt got anything that any of your software couldnt do!!!!!!!! and their getting quite old and out dated now.....you would be better off investing in some high quality drum sample cds.......or save your money and get something better.......ive used them....along with the zoom one and their not very good. dont believe the hype.

i've got to agree with munki on this one...sure, sounds pretty fresh at the moment you try it out, but after a while the reality's gonna sink in. or at least it would for me.

yknow theres always the electron machinedrum......yeh i know its expensive but theres a reason for that.
if you going to get a hardware drum machine get something that samples!!!!!! because it wont take long to realise that the sounds available in something like this can only be tweaked so much.....and before long theyll be in the computer being mashed up.....so whats changed??? nothing!!!! you could spend the equvilent money on a set of decent sample cds.......one with live drums and one with electronic. more for your money!!!!! and better quality to!!!!!!! and im not talking a dodgy thirty euro one fromt time and space.........build it and they will come........or do some research and get some shit hot top quality brilliantly engineered loops and hits.

I reckon it looks pretty cool. Its can be battery powered so will be great for composing on the go.
If you get tired of the stock sounds then you can always circuit bend it! Then you'll have this unique crazy ass screaming box capable of producing some fucked up sounds.

it can hook up to the SP-303 externally, for use of a sampler also that can be controlled from my DR-202.

The BOSS SP-303 Dr. Sample offers DJs and musicians a compact, easy-to-use portable phrase sampler with CD-quality sound, 8-note polyphony, 26 onboard effects and a realtime pattern sequencer—all at a price unmatched by the competition. So is a laptop, and it can do so much more... On the other hand, since you are taking a course in production it is probably a good way to learn to work with a piece of hardware. Especially the part where every button has about 5 different functions.

I don't know how I should react on this.
* Where does the sound come from? Is it samples? Or are they electronical produced with waveforms?
* Are you abel to make your own drumsounds with waveforms or change the drumsounds?

i dunno. there's a lot of sampled electronic sounds i guess.
there's jungle drum and bass, classic 909 and 808s, the sound quality ins't the phattest, but there's like 50 sounds for each of the drum styles it shows on the front, and 50 drum sounds also, and i love just programing weird shit into it.
the durm roll add's some nice dnb sounds also, to make it just sckizzle along, there's also a hack to make the drums roll run through the bassline to set there pitch for it manuly.

I used to have these Roland MC-XOX shite grooveboxes. The 505 is still hangin' in the house somewhere. For the money you're spending I would add an extra 50 and get a second hand laptop and use that on the train (I do it that way).
My experience with these boxes is awfull. You need eleven fingers to press the weirdest key combinations and I get the feeling that I'm trying to make music on a pc with the screen switched off. And the sounds are simply LAME (atleast for the Roland bollocks). I'm sure you'll be bored with this in a month or 2. And you can't play solitaire on it
