Hi!

Im off on my travels fairly soon, on the road around europe, so im looking for a decent synth that can be operated on batteries and isnt too big. I am gonna be in a camper van so it doesnt have to be pocket sized Im hoping that when im away im gonna be able to concentrate heavily on learning the method synthesis, that whichever one I decide to buy, uses. I also hoping that it'll keep me occupied & give me something to do in my spare time (if I have any).

price isnt really an issue - im open to anything as long as it can be battery operated. Im not even considering anything that cant be!

Things ive been looking at so far are

Yamaha DX100 - mainly because of its ability to emulate 'real' instruments (FM)

Korg Microkorg (analogue modelling)

Roland MC202 & SH-101 (analogue, subtractive)

The yamaha is looking favourite at the moment but if anyone can suggest any other alternatives I would be very grateful.

cheers! Tongue

yeah I did think that, but then I heard that with a bit of knowledge of FM synthesis you can get some very twisted and usual sounds out of the DX-100....

yeah ive heard that FM is pretty shit hot when you know how to program it, which is why i'd like to take the time to learn it whilst im away.

does anyone know of anywhere where I can hear some more samples of what sounds the microkorg is capable of producing? and dont say the new prodigy album!!!!

all the clips ive found online are the same as the ones on the official korg site. I really need to hear some more sounds before I can really make up my mind.

oh and this may sound like a stupid question but is possible to emulate in 'real' instruments with the korg? piano in particular.

cheers Bigup

FM just enables you to multi-timber sounds, that are just fuller than most analog synths that do mono-timber.
but there's also a lot of programing to get decent sounds out of FM. so if you got the time, FM would probably be the more promising of the differetn types of synth, only because it's time consuming.

yeh but the last thing id want to be doing if im on holiday/ on my travels would be programming synths all day.........much easier if youve got some decent quality presets you can tweak to get the sound your after. and less time consuming.......

im not really planning to be spending all my time playing on the synth - its just a kind of hobby/something to keep occupied on those quiet nights.

playing guitar & learning a form of synthesis seems to me, to be quite constructive, interesting & entertaining.
