Turn off the swapfile, reboot, defragment, turn on the swapfile, reboot. Simple

Norton speed disk is a pretty good optimiser since it defrag the disk and move the frequenly used files at the begenning of the hard drive so it's much faster. (IMO... of course!)
The swapfile should be the double of the memory capacities, don't know what it does if you put more of it since hard disk are way slower than the memory...
Anyway, if you got 2 disks, you can put the OS on one and your swap file on the other, save a lot of "access time", but that's obvious!!!!
Dell is 100% shit, as all the other major brand, the only good thing about them is the one day shipping thing and the take over at your home, that's all!!!!
If you plan to change your pc, have a look at:
http://search.ebay.fr/_W0QQsassZpcQ5fdolph
That's an online shop, the best i've seen so far in term of prices ( and that's my job for quite some time now.... :bigup
, and that apply to all of YOU!!!!!!! ( even the chronic!!!!!!
)
For examples:
AMD Athlon™ @XP3600+ASRock(ASUS)K7V880 Dual-Ch+Thermalt
will only cost you: 124,90 EUR!!!!
So that's a athlon64@3600 with a M board that can deal with Dual channel ( double your access time on the memory!!!) and the cooler....
Just the proc is way more expensive, and the guy is really really reliable....
There yo
u are

was checking out a article on optomizing a drive for music, and if you're using one drive you need to partition it 3 times,
the first one is for Audio, the second for System, and the third for Data.
data that is one the outside of the disk of our harddrive, is access the fastest. when you partition, the first or highet letter drive are on the outter most part of the drives.
Audio
this is for most of the active memeory, like all your Music Programs, and samples you use, and the files that you currently use. everything that needs fast access by the memory should be put here, but it should be about 10% of the drive, a few GIGs of memory.
System
for a one drive setup, you would have to reinstall or use Partion program and make sure your OS is here. this will allow it faster access than the Data section.
Data
inactive memory storage, basicly. all your sample libares and tracks you arn't using, songs you have finished with, everything that's doesn't need to be accessed quickly should go here. sound liberaries all of it.
for 2 drive setups, you just have a Audio and Data
now if you're working on a cd worth of tracks, and accessing them regularly best to put them in Audio. once you've finshed with them put them into Data for storage.
for big romplers, that have huge libaries, or even just The GRand, which access the sound files as you hit the keys, it's a bad idea to put them into Data, but Audio.
this will pick up the paces on accessing files, and will reduce fileswaping, since there's a quick file access time.

I would put the OS on the first part with the audio progs, Way better to use multiple hard disk, split your access time by 2....
Kind regards

got me a second hard drive yesterday, only 20gb but it does the job..
one partition of 2gb being used for the swapfile ONLY (so it can't get fragmented) and the other stacked with samples etc.
and this way my pc's running smooooth

Watch out as it can get fragmented!!
This is because, virtually, the swap file is 1 file, but it is not! It is a kind of archive of multiple files, which, of course, can get fragmentation inside the swap file

yeah, the second drive solved problems for only a while.. in truth 256Mb of RAM is never enough on an XP system.. one day I just went and bought a 512 module. now I got a weird figure of 768 but who cares since it works so much better!
