check their Ipecac label here...
and the whole Mike Patton/Mr. Bungle/Fantomas story here

It blew me and some friends TOTALLY away on Dour and Mr Bungle belongs - together with Kid Koala and Keith Jarrett - to my utmost lifetime top 3 artists.
So check it out, and DON'T even think of taking the risk of saying anything bad about them... Big Grin

Soo...
After arriving in Tilburg where the local coffeeshop, or shall i say 'Rookhuis' took us by surprise - touchscreen/bouncer @ the door/nuthing but prepacked little boxes WITH an additional 0,20€ deposit and a fairly high MacDonald's pick'n'pay'n'run-psychology.
Antwerp-Gent-BXL-based FES was the support act. Think: cinematic-soundscape-like twisted bigband.
But Fantomas were incredibely fenomenal. When i come to think of it, as a live-band, the stuff they do is almost impossible to do. They use sooo many different rythmes/rythm-changes/tempo-switches that it reminded me of a hyperkinetic Stephen Hawkins on LSD with his hands on a HUGE keyboard with each tone assigned to a bizar riff of some sort.
Drummer Terry Bozzio (it was a guest appearance, Dave Lombardo - Slayer - is their usual drummer) did a fairly good job on the drums (i've never seen a drumkit that big - he litteraly had to enter and take a seat in the midst of his drumshuttle).
Looking at this fourtet Mike Patton on electronics/samples/voices/..., Trevor Dunn (bas) Buzz Osborne (guitar) and Terry Bozzio, you cannot but have a huge amount of respect for these guys. It even happened twice that they stopped playing, told the audience 'it is ok for you to BOOO us now, cuz we're simply not playing this song too well, so we're gonna do it again', you can imagine the maximum impact of this kind of music when it's well-performed/played.
I must admit however, that i like their albums more, they use a bit more overall-fx in there, the livegig is more of a simplistic setup: dry drums + SOLID guitar&bass rythmsection + electronics/vocals.
In any case, go check out the cd's cuz chances are that you won't have heard such ingenious/farfetched/multi-sided/twisted soundscape and metalmayhem in a while...

They're not bad, they're definitely good. I just don't see how it's any different than most other metal oriented bands that fall under their category. Is it supposed to be like "cutting edge" or something? Rock bands have been doing tempo changes, rhythm changes, and superior performances live for years and years. When are we ever going to see someone doing something new with rock? I mean, if you compare a rock song from 1970 to a rock song from 2005, it's just going to sound better because of better equipment, and maybe use some funkier riffs with a little more grind to it........but all in all......metal music keeps sounding the same to me. You of course have your varying levels of metal, from incredibly soft, to incredibly hard.....but you've always had that.

I'm not saying they're bad, or that I don't like them, so don't get the wrong impression. I'm just wondering why you guys hype them up so much.
