right, basically I've been going at writing dnb a few months now, so may be missing some fundamental ideas so bear with me

what I'm after is the sound in "dj hazard - enuf is enuf", or "dillinja - hard noize" or that clipz uses so much, or even that tune in the old flat eric ads - also that badass tune that goes check check check check check 1 check 1 check 1 check 1 (dont know the name song i.d. anyone?)
wowww waowww wowowowow etc. the sounds are really fat, juicy and just sound mental and thats what I'm trying to get. that dnb waow.

as I've said I've been trying for a while, I figure its got to be down to a sliding lp filter with a bit of Q, so I put one over a basic pulse or saw reese and its okay, but I dont get anything near the .. err 'wow-factor' that all the other dnb I listen to seems to get. mine just sounds very tacky, flat and lame, basically just like a tacky filter sweep with a bit of Q

this makes me think 2 things, first the sound I'm putting the filter over maybe isnt right for that wholesome sound I'm trying to get. as I said, I'm using a reesed saw or pulse.

the second thing I think is that the filters I'm using may not be good enough - typically I just use the filter on the synth I'm using , I dont often set up a full effect chain (cos the synths tend to have chorus, filters etc. built-in (maybe I should be?)

third (I know I only said 2), looking around I notice other people seem to use huge effect chains for their basses. could this be letting me down perhaps? can a synth on its own (I've just got hol of absynth 2 and am holding high hopes for it) produce a quality fat bass sound good enough for immediate use or do you always realistically need to use reverbs, gates, distorts, eq's etc.?

I'm using buzz with vst plugins, tho I've got reason (not really used it yet)

/

finally I see theres alot of trheads with extensive descriptions of specific techniques, have any of these been collected into tutorials/resources anywhere? I've seen lots of electronic music tutorials, but few go into the excellent detail of things that are so important to dnb (I didnt even know the word reese till I came onto this site), are there any good/highly regarded dnb resources outside of the site if not in it?

so yeah, basically just any advice would be apreciated

ok you can get the flat eric sound in reason really easily........use the old sample player
first up pick ya noise......then sync the lfo, then set the lfo to the filter, then just apply the amount of lfo and type you want, edit the the filter and there you go, instant flat eric.

but remember , people layer their sounds, try what i suggested with a lead stly sound, then run some sub underneath. you might need to thin the lead sound out a little, but that can be with the type of filter you use.

and as for techniques, i always think the best thing you can do is just experiment, get it all wrong and you will evetually learn how to get it right. you dont have to just make a tune, try just designing sounds

so what vst filters do people use? I'm imagining theres probably quite alot of difference between them.

is any synth e.g. absynth, enough on its own to produce decent bass?
is it better to use a separate filter, or just use the one built in

what exactly is layering?
