I was wondering what kind of samples you guys are using to get the right sound in your breaks... The more chaotic ones
1) kicks?
2) snares?
3) ghosts?
4) rides?
5) ?????

i don't completely understand the question....
What is it you're trying to ask?
Of course beats are made with kicks, snares, hihats, rides, ghosts, and possible multitude of your favo sounds

all of 'em
remember: there are NO rules.
but to answer your question: i use the drumnbass.be-samplepacks =>metallic sounding snares sometimes.
But bear in mind that making music is a continuous search for the right samples.

Look, don't over-focus on what other people use for samples.
Maybe i can help you with the following: you probably heard lota people on this board talking about 'layering', well, start making your own hits (kicks, snares are the most important ones, then cymbals, ghosts,...)
For example: when you need a good/solid kick to work with, you might try and layer two kicks, one snappy/punchy/short (with higher frequencies) + the second long, deep kick. after some experimenting with positioning/eq/volumes you just might find yourself outrageous: you just made a killer-kick.
Same for snares, try layering 3 snares : one long (tssssj), one short (tak) + a clap (yeah, that's right, a handclap), these 3 combined make good snares.
try it.

Well, I try to layer some sounds over the samples, so it's not the sample itself. A trick: take a 3xosc (in Fruity) or any oscilator with polyphone sound, set its attack and predelay times at 0 ms, set the hold time very, VERY short (example 2-6 ms), set the decay time to some 15 ms (or less), and sustain and release times to 10 ms max.
Choose (or adjust the oscilator) to make some noise sound, but quite loud. Layer it with your snare (or hat) perscussion - BOOM you have better, aggressive snare rocking!

Earlyer this week I was working on a new track, and I wanted a new snare sound, but I couldn't find anything to fit it, so I started adding distortion quite agressivly. After 4 hours of experimenting with the distortion, EQing, compression and offcourse additional layering, I got it, and the feedback from friends is what I wanted: it's completely over the top
Maybe we should do a "most intense snare" compo or something

I've achieved a metalic snare out of a normal wood snare with adding distorsions (in incredible amounts)

heres an idea........save some money and buy a decent sample cd, im not talking one of these 30£ ones from time and space (although some are ok) i mean high end expensive ones........but audition them before u buy,
then theres the alternative of getting a decent recording from a live kit, layer this with your digital drums for a more authentic sound, worked for me anyway.
then you could always go and do what most people do and sample some old vinyl or cds.........just dont be blatantly obvious about it. this is probably the cheapest and most sensible option.....just make sure you obscure what u use.

not true.
most sample cds are shit.
but theres a lot of high end ones people dont even know exist!!!!
and the only reason youll sound like everyone else is if you blatanly use loops.........
im not talking those shit time and space ones........

i find thoes nano techn nsres usekess, but the metallic ones priceless. they make for a great full sound layerd with a durm machine like snare and a JX-305 snares that have DC offsets, or just real snares or acoustic snares.... thick and sharp....
