ok.first uo by no means am i recommending anyone incriminates themselves by putting something illegal in this thread.
but some one suggested to me the other day i buy a wireless usb card and use my neigbours set up to filch their broadband connection, so i get it free.
now i like my neighbour and i dont really want to stitch any one up or get taken to court for it. so does anyone know of a way to speed up the connection speed, and get it any cheaper.
im currently paying around £20 a month, for 512kbs

This works
- If your neighbor HAS wireless
- If your neighbor hasn't protected his installation against this... Does he know anything about networking?

Hmm protecting a wireless connection sufficiently is EXTREMELY hard. Any router which handles both the internet connection/sharing and the wireless is unsafe - no exceptions. Hacking into such a thing can be done using simple available tools (no - not gonna post which-ones) - and takes only half an hour to crack the hardest encryption you can put on it (WEP128 keys). MAC address blocking, encryption, ... are way to easy to get around if you really want to get in, and it doesn't take a lot of time to get in if you have the knowledge. This hacking is illegal, so I won't go into detail about this.
A secure wireless setup requires a seperate router/firewall with at least 2 network interfaces + internet connection (so probably 3 network interfaces) of which one of the interfaces is connected to a standalone access point, which can only access the internet using a VPN (Virtual Private Network) using a strong encryption. This is very hard to configure properly, even in small to medium-sized companies this setup is rare, but this is the only option for "safe" wireless.

yea tech tv gave how to secure your router, and itw as a list as long as my arm, there's a lot invovled. and that's mostly just from casual browsers.
i used to go in Computer Programming,a nd we'd go round in our car with a laptop and a pringo's tube on breaks, it was a fun. residential areas are good, specialy the big homes.
basicly the tube would amplify any signals in that direction it's pointing. you can ge them from halfway across town, with line of sight.
tried to link a wireless LAN from across town doing that, but none of us wanted to bust into the guys computer, we're not malicious, we just tried to find one that was unsecured. most of them are at least basicly secured.

never heard of pringos either, but you can make a external (directional) antenna for wireless networks using a pringles can indeed. It gives a couple of dB's gain on the wireless connections, and in any wireless connection a few dB can mean a lot of improvement. Just type pringles can antenna or something in google and you will find a design for it in a few minutes
