I have heard mixed reviews on the Alesis 3630, but people have said that if you mod it out it is a bad ass little toy. I picked a new one up for really cheap, and it seems to be doing it's job, but I guess the way it was marketed is FARRRRRR from what is actually does. I have read that you can modify it so that it does what it should have done in the first place, and that there are other little modifications you can do to it to increase its usefulness. I'm new to this board but thought someone here may be able to help me. Does anyone know how to do this, or what they are talking about?
- cheers

What do you mean it doesn't do what it should do? It's a simple stereo compressor. I used to have a couple and they work fine but the sound quality is as you can expect from a 115€ compressor.
What is the mod supposed to be doing?

I found the following page about the mod:
http://www.recording.org/e-mag/article_81.shtml
What the mod basically does is replacing some of the unit's components (such as the VCAs, the level detector chips and op amps) by high-quality versions.
So you'll have the same functionality but a much better sound quality.

This looks to me like a very usefull modification.
This should also work with other cheap compressors like the Dbx 266. I have one and I will open it up to see if it could work.
Greetings Dirk.

A friend of mine has done this mod on his alesis 3630 . It seems to be an improvement but not much .
I could not open my dbx 266 but we compared the two and before the mod we liked the dbx a bit more . After the mod it was the other way around .
I don't think it's worth doing .
Greetings Dirk .
