IMO the most important thing to do when programming drums is to vary your hits so the beats don't sound too repetitive, try to change something in your beat every 2nd, 4th, 8th, 16th bar.... Copy and paste is your friend when making drum beats.
I found this page really useful when I first started out making beats.

You should check out some of my programming.....I VERY rarely use the [bd--sn----bdsn--] pattern......there's a SHITLOAD of variations you can put on drums to switch them up.
[bd--snbd--snbd--]
[bdbdsn----bd--sn]
[bd--sn----snbdsn]
[bdbdbdbdbdbdbdbd]
Haha......make sure you add ghosts accordingly, hi hats where needed, retriggered snare sweeps on demand, filtering, flangeing, phasing, gapping, snipping, rhythmic metalization delay......you get the point. Whatever you want to do......you can do. You use FL correct? If you ever want the flp's of some drum patterns to look over and learn for yourself.....let me know.....I'll make some up for you.
