far as I know, you can buy it, except in the states.
it was only recently legalized, for the past 80 years i think it was banned.
mmm wormwood.
it's not good to have too often, but there are medcinal benfits. becareful not abuse the awsome power.
but you can order it online, and it's okay to get that way as i know it.

Hill's Absinth is the one with wormwood extract. it's not the best absinthe though.
JAde is suppose to be amazing. and Nouvelle-Orléans.
http://www.feeverte.net/guide/ is a nice buyers guide from absinthe across the globe.
france makes the best, i assume.
oh and read the FAQ section, quite interesting
quote: |
Absinthe's effects, despite popular conception, are not due to the wormwood (Artemisia Absinthia) alone. Absinthe's constituents consist of a very delicate balance of various herbs, most of which contribute in one way or another to its intoxicating effects. Ted Breaux once explained it that it is a push-me, pull-you effect of the various herbs, as some are of an heightening effect, and others are lowering. |
oh and this about hill's
quote: |
6) Is Hill's any good? Why not?
Why the debate on Hill's at all? Well, because Hill's is almost single handedly responsible for the recent absinthe boom in the UK. They realized there was an untapped market and took advantage of it. In consequence, they are now the most widely known absinthe, get most the press, and, unfortunately, will become what other absinthe's are judged by. Why is this not a good thing? Because it is generally believed amongst those who know their absinthe that Hill's is swill. At 140 proof, with little or no herbal content, and the color (and flavor) of mouthwash, this causes little wonder amongst anyone familiar with absinthe history and/or the finer Spanish varieties currently available.
Hill's is, in effect, a placebo disguised as absinthe. A few glasses of any 70% alcohol will send someone driving into fence posts and talking to things that aren't there. But because the bottle is marked "Absinth" people imagine they are having a dance with the green fairy.
As Hill's clones are starting to hit the market, buyer beware, Hill's and its imitators are generally considered to be undrinkable, and definitely NOT absinthe!

7) What is the best commercially available Absinthe?
see The Absinthe Buyer's Guide for Reviews, Pricing, Availability & Vendor details
The recommendations of the absintheusiasts who frequent the forum here are thus (though there are many more fine absinthes available, this is a quick list, and must be considered completely subjective):
1) Un Emile 68: A wonderfully clean distilled absinthe manufactured by the Pernot Distillery in France in an original absinthe still from the Belle Epoque. The closest thing so far to having anything that resembles a fine vintage absinthe. You can add Emile Sapin to this item, as it is very similar but has added pine (!) to the mixture. A slightly more alpine flavor, but very subtle and refreshing.
2) Emile la Blanche: Styled after a Suisse la Bleue, this is an absinthe made without the final coloration step. Slightly simpler than a colored distilled absinthe, it a very crisp and refreshing beverage.
3) La Fée: Produced in France but distributed out of the U.K. La Fée is a collaboration between Green Bohemia in the U.K. & Marie Delahaye in France that is an attempt to get closer to some of the original 19th century recipes, and while it does not quite achieve this it is by far one of the best commercially produced absinthes available today, although extremely difficult to get as it is only available in the U.K (aside from a single reseller in the States). It is certainly one of the better balanced products available currently.
4) François Guy: Made by the Grandson of the manufacturer known as Armand Guy, who produced an absinthe of the same name during the Belle Epoque.
5) Segarra Absenta: Segarra is produced in small scale but definately has the strongest and most developed herbal makeup of all the Spanish brands.
