music production, synths, building speakers, sound,
things like that?

depends, theres books for reason you can pick up.

midi orchastration, there's dumbies books for song wrighting.

i got digital music production for teens book.

http://www.course.com/catalog/product.cf...n=1-59200-508-X

it's for schools, but it helps for midi and stuff.

goes through sonar for what to do, free programs so you can learn with tutorials.

i get lots of books on it, not nerdy. there's music tech and future music magainze, i suggest Music Tech they usually have 10 minute master that talk about that stuff, as well as about vst's, hardware synths, and monitors.

nothing about building speakers i can help you with. best i can say is goto your books store and ask for the ARt's or Music section. there is a plethora of books there, i assume. just today i found an entire display about music books setup at the front of chapters books store....

they should have them.

Bigup

there should be books for arrangments in midi also.

the magazines might help you a lot though. i find there the biggest help with tutuorials for certin things, and demos of programs...

this ones a recommended list made by a member there

and there's http://www.musicbooksplus.com/

this one seems really useful, you just have to browse in there a little, they cover frickin EVERYTHING, looks like.
sorry i can't recommend any really good ones from personal experience with them, you'll just have to trust user reviews on these sites i guess. hope this stuff helps. i'm sure you could find more by googling "music production books".

A good book about sound in Dutch is
"John R. Pierce
Klank en Muziek. Uitg. Natuur en Techniek, Maastricht."
I found it in my library some years ago.
It is a bit techy but you should be able to find it in your lib or at least make them order it..

Well you could take a look at some of the books from elektuur

I did a quick look-up on their sit and i found this book about pa and if found this magazine article about building speaker systems in the december 1997 issue
It could happen that your lib has a suscription to this magazine or these books. The bigger libraries usually have them.

Thats why shops like Speakerland are handy , you can listen to all the speakers they sell and buy the one that you like best . You can even listen to the speakers at home .

The speakerplans.com are PA speakers not for studio/home use . But if you want a rave these are the speakers for you .

The laws of nature say that if you want Phatt Bass you need big speakers , thats why those pa speakers are so big .

Greetings Dirk .

(offtopic)

lol dirk, you surprise me here. Normally I respect your technical knowledge, but your idea of speakers is really completely off.

The examples on the site you gave can never be used for music production. They'll sound like, well, 6 pieces of wood with some hifi speakers inside lol. When I saw that site I first thought you meant it as a joke!

You can't do mixdowns on hifi speakers, pro audio and hifi are two completely different approaches. This has been discussed thoroughly in other threads btw.

PS If you want good sounding bass the worst you can do is buying big speakers Wink 21"!!! lol I should show them to the people I work with they'll laugh their ass off.

We're not living in the eighties anymore with Jean-Michel Jarre and his big wobbly woofers. Nowadays people expect punchy, tight, precise bass coming from small 12" woofers in an acoustically coupled array Wink

Back on topic now, books!

I have recently bought these ones:
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0916899004/
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0240519175/

Both on control room design. I'm planning on building a control room in the summer. I've started to read the first one, most ideas are a bit dated and all measures are in feet which is impossible to work with in Europe. Still the theory is interesting. Haven't started on the second one yet.

For basics on audio, check out the books written by Paul White, the editor of sound on sound:
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/search...%3DPaul%20White

Haven't read them yet but they are cheap and I enjoyed Paul's articles when I read sound on sound a couple of years ago.

Sound on sound is a really good magazine if you are interesting in learning about music production btw!
