Hehe
If needle damdges groves of the platter why laser beam isn't used for reading the data - like in CD players? Anyone got idea?
Ah. This technology is being patented right now

It's a different idea. The lasers in CD-players detect bumps in the CD surface - if the laser reflects off a bump or not you get a binary signal 110001110010
Vinyl works with two analog signals (loudness and phase, or was it mid and side
) that are analog and vary infinitely between their minimum and maximum values... One of the signals is recorded by moving the needle sideways and the other by making the needle go deeper or less deep. It would be very hard to make an optical laser pick up that could read this, not in the least because vinyls are not standardised very much, like the groove spacing and depth etc
Cool idea though, if you can work it out you'll be rich

Yes, you did see too much of 'm (Goldfinger in particular
). CD's are made of plastic also, and I still have to encounter the first CD player that actually burns HOLES in CDs

I had a faulty CD-burner once (a Plextor BTW) that actually burnt holes in every CD I tried to burn with it. You could see right through the metal layer
There always was a thick line that went round half a circle and then a hole. I still have those CDs lying around, with '4x' '8x' etc marked on them. I intended to show them to the Plextor guys but now my warranty is over, and I bought a new drive in the meantime

turntables with laser eyes exist, in japan, but not in that kind of stability that you could go around and spin some records, so it's for couch use only (
)
it's from japan and costs a shitload of money
gonna search some info on it later on

Needles get the music out of the vinyl by bouncing and moving arund inside the groove more or less.
And as far as stoners losing fingers to lasers.... what are you talking about? The lasers aren't that powerful... it's not like a star wars laser gun or something

Burning lasers????? we're talking about stuff for home use here, trust me these things couldn't burn anything whithing the first few minutes, as for cd-r burners: that's why they call it burning
reason: cd rotation speed to low. it is idd possible, but not yet perfect, certainly not for dj use, guess i'll just have to make one, would take some adaptions to the turntable 2 i guess

I've seen a laser record player (not yet a tt) for sale somewhere on the net once, looked like a laserdisc player but for vinyl, really weird.

How about this little neat peace of equipment!.
Designed by world's most famous turntablist supreme, dj Q-Bert.A tad more expensive than a Gameboy, but well worth waiting at the trafficlight with that ufo.

Wow......people really can't take jokes can they? We all know the lasers used on cd players can't burn your fingers......but those of us with imaginations can have a lot more fun with it if we think they do!!
And that QFO is definately not made for mixing.......it's a turntablist turntable of tablical proportions
