I will try to explain :
Distortion depends on input level , more input more distortion .
But EQ/filters don't depend on input volume they simply multiply parts of the signal .
Ofcause it matters a lot if you EQ before or after distortion .
Because you can sample the impulse responce of every device you can make a filter with that impulse responce ( very simplyfied and incomplete explanation)
Rooms have just one impulse responce but distortion devices have a lot ( to infinity )
So if you have taken one impulse responce of a distortion device the FIR filter will alway's reproduce the distortion of that one impulse no matter how high or low the input signal of the FIR filter . ( Does this make any sence or do I need an other ass kicking ? )
To acurately reproduce the behaviour of the distortion device you simply need a lot of different impulses , with different amplitude and interpolate between them .
