I'm just getting started to seriously make some tunes but I don't know where to start. I need a good drum machine. I'm using a mac G4. Looking at software or harware. Thinking of Protools LE with Mbox, Korg electribe ESX1, ???
Any advice?

Go for a TR909 or TR808 .
These are the booming machines , nothing gets close .
The Jomox has extremely good hihats but not the power in the kick of the roland stuff .
Cheapest solution check this site or buy a desent sample cd .

if your thinking of a korg get the sampling version.......much better..but most pros making dance music are using recycle with reason and samples........usually rewired so the audio architecture of the master (cubase/p tools/logic whatever) is used instead of reasons dodgy sound!!!
in terms of hardware the electron machinedrum is baaaad!!!! but very expensive

MC303!!!! for life. i only say this for simple programing,a nd weird heavy sounds. kinda like a toy, but still, if you want one that uses samples, this isn't one you want. but it does to jungle snares and sick kicks.
Has all the great Roland drum machines TR909,808,606 and the legendary TB303 bass line sounds!!
YAMAHA RM1X groovebox, is a more current one that would probably be better, dunno though.

sorry, but you guys are clueless, 808 and 909?!?!
classics yeah, but not the best ones, at least not when it comes to value for money. Have you checked out elektron sps-1 machinedrum?
or a sampler of course, like ultradark said.
soundsamples on www.elektron.se

Just go and buy reason. It has a drum machine and synths and samplers. Im sure u can get version 2.5 cheap now that v3 has come out. Although you'll need either version 3 or a good mastering program (oZone/Adobe Audition is my personal favourite)

If you think sound quality is most important go for the real machines . ( Tr808 - Tr909 ) You still need a sampler with them .
The Alesis SR16 does sound pretty good and is realy cheap . I don't know how it is to program . ( should be dead eazy )
MC303 has also very usable drumsounds and is very eazy to program .
RM1X has the same sound quality as the SR16 and MC303 but is much more complex than the MC303 .
The machine drum is very eazy to program and has the most sounds but in my humble opinion not better soundquality then the SR16/MC303/RM1X .
If you are new to music making and have a computter get a copy of reason/fruityloops/ableton , these programs are real fun but not as good soundquality as the SR16/MC303/RM1X/Machinedrum .
Summary : basicaly every one of these machines/programs is good enough for making drumnbass music .
Greetings Dirk .

I recently bought the electribe rhtyhm synth but I don't like the snares at all!! So I'm gonna get rid of it and look for a replacement. I read about the roland stuff here and I was wondering if the MPC line from Akai (MPC1000, MPC2000,...) is as good as the roland machines. Or is roland the ultimate top for making drums and basses for DnB. Somebody can help me out???

mc303, some find easier to program, but lacks the sounds...
akai is better sampler. i just want a mc303.... that's all.
late to say but Korg Electribe EMX1 would be the best for under 440 pounds.
