I'm using the build-in soundcard of my apple emac, and i'm quite happy with it. Is a budget external usb/firewire (200 to 300 ¤) audio interface much better than the one i'm using now. (i only need 2 in 2 out)....which one is a good choice??

Well, the quality of a soundcard is a matter of build quality and stuff like frequency responce curve, signal/noise ratio... Build-in soundcards usually have a not so pretty frequency responce curve and worse signal/noise ratio... So a ¤300 external soundcard wil usually be quite a good improvement.

I'm not sure what they cost, but have a look at the M-Audio solutions, don't, under anny circumstance, buy Creative Sound Blaster cards, they suck, whatever specs they might boast...

Good luck with the interface!

Do you notice an increase in sound quality?

The output is a bit better and its more dynamic (i.e. you can hear clipping better) but the input is alot better, and i like using hardware sounds. So i'm happy with my new stuff..

Yup, like you would have on music DVD's, movie DVD's, DVDA/SACD... For DVD's with movies or concerts etc. mainly used to make u feel more in the middle of the action, like plane's flying over, or hearing a part of the crowd behind you,... On DVDA/SACD it used to emulate the reflections of the room as if you where witnessing a (acoustic) concert, but without the crowd sounds.
If you are a creative producer you could use it to extend the classic panning/stereo placement to a surround, like sudden basshits coming from behind you or something. But I guess the technology isn't spread enough yet to do this.

the release of Downward spiral was remasterd in 5.1

lot of new cd's get that treatment now i hear. live concerts dvd's and that also have that. it's not everywhere but it might catch on.

but hey still wicked cool you could do that. Audiophile seems like apretty damn good system for a good price.
