So, lots of partyanimals, DJ's and producers on this forum... I guess some of you have eardamage?
I have a little damage in my right ear, I can hear a constant humming when it's REALLY quiet (like when I'm in bed at night or smth)

that sounded painful about the other guy, how his ears just popped, and sounds a bit quiet. that's like torture.

This is something that worries me a lot, cos once every blue moon all of a sudden everything sounds really clear and distinct - from which i deduce that 90 percent of the time my hearing is really shit and clouded. Plus, I have more and more difficulty hearing people in clubs and whatnot. Trust me, constantly having to say "WHAT?!" to everybody is a real fucking pain just as much for me as much as for them. But then again it aint as bad as when you just fake like you're hearing soomeone and nod and say "yeah cool" everyonce in a while with a big grin all over your face, and then it turns out that they're telling you something like they're mother just died and they were abused as a kid.
Where do you have to go to get em checked? Will any doctor be able to do it? Is it free just to find out?

Well, fortunately, and NOT thanks to the bearded man, I have no ear damage, because I save my ears.
Save yours, it is cheaper to hear good than to buy louder equipment

I buy earplugs at the local pharmacy... I alway get those wax ones, since you can choose how big they are and you can make them fit perfectly. Choosing how big they are means you can choose how much they reduce the noise. I usually take small ones and put them almost loose in my ear so they only lower the volume of the high- and mid range, giving the feel somebody put the EQ on a more ear-friendly setting.
When I use them, I have full use of my ears back only a few hours after the party is over, back when I didn't use them, it sometimes took 3 days... Not good.

This shouldn't be a big problem, if it's only now and then and not from extremely loud noise. Ears can repair the damage if not too severe. But if you have it every week, the damage won't be repaired in time, and the damage will become permanent and worse every time, so watch out with that!

The receptors of sounds in our ears are a kind of micro-leafs, which vibrate as the soundwaves enter the outer ear and hit the ear-drum. Now, they have different sizes, and this is logic because we can hear different frequencies. If they were with the same size, we would have been able to hear only a very limited range of frequencies (60Hz).
Now, these leafs are bigger for lower frequencies, and smaller for higher frequencies. Humans can hear frequencies from 16-20,000 Hz, and you can imagine what kind of precise equipment we have in our ears!
When a large amount of compressed music strikes on the ear-drum, it hits the leafs and it sticks them to the surface on which they stand tall. Afterwards, when the music influence is over, they gradually unstick themselves, and stand up.
This ability is known as the "ear-recovery". But, if you torture your ears very often with loud, compressed music, you will gradually loose the ear-recovery possibility.
Always the high-frequency leafs are the ones that suffer most, because they are smaller, sensitivier, and easier to influence. (This is because in the wilds if you hear some hushing of a leaf of a tree, you can be aware that a predator is hunting you. That's why they're so sensitive). And that is why some people hear high-pitched sound when sleeping etc. because their high-freq. leafs are damaged and give wrong informations to the brain.
Old people have the same problem, but that is because their high-freq. leafs begin to loose their ability to recover with the life-long sound influences, no matter if it was loud or quiet.
Here, I hope this helped

Ouch!! My audio engineering teacher has told me repeatedly that you should not clean your ears, and if you do, not more than once every six months. I haven't cleaned my ears in years now and they are doing fine and do not have a dirty look
Your earwax performs selfcleaning of your hearing canal, if you clean them you remove the earwax, causing your ear to produce more earwax and that becomes messy after a while. You need to lower your cleaning rate gradually, first to once a week, then once every two weeks, etc until you are at once every six months. You'll notice your earwax will not bother you anymore after a while.
golden rules:
- always carry multiple sets of earplugs, put them in your car, jacket, wallet, trousers etc so you are never without them. I buy packs of 100 standard yellow earplugs for like 35 euro, enough for a year including handing them out to your friends.
- always wear earplugs at parties and *never* take them out, it's worse taking them out for a couple of minutes than it is to be in a noisy environment for 30 minutes. Your ears cannot adapt to a sudden increase in loudness.
- you can make conversation more easily with earplugs than without, but you need to speak louder than you think.
- do not reuse earplugs too often, throw them away when they look dirty.
- wear earplugs when you go swimming! if you don't then rinse out your ears with clean bottled water afterwards, ignore any funny looks you get. The bacteria in the sea, or in rivers etc can cause ear infections. Swimming pools have nasty chemicals and should be avoided too. The shower is safe.
- short exposure to noise is harmless, but longer periods are harmful. If you go to party without earplugs, take a 10 minute break every half hour, away from the music.
- don't open the car window next to your head when you're driving
- when you have to make a long drive, wear earplugs. The car noise becomes damaging after a couple of hours.
- when you sleep with earplugs mosquitos do not bother you

2 weeks for partial recovery, 3 weeks for full recovery. The recovery speeds up as more time passes.
This can be integrated dX/dY to calculate
:hehe:

good to know , thanks for advice, but I can tell you that few days ago when I was tweaking some sounds, on a certain frequency my left ear responded like broken speaker [strange clicking] I tried to reverse my phones but it was still the left ear.. so it was not caused by headphones, I then cleaned my ear and the noise was gone ..
