can you microphone record with a Line-In(optical) or do you have to have a Microphone jack?
i would assume you'd want a microphone but is there a difference? i assume there would be different pick up, because a line-in may have extra pick-up or something, and doesn't need a signal boost, where as normal mics, dooo.....?

The difference between different inputs is impedance and the amount of amplification .
Mic inputs have impedance that is between 200 and 1500 ohm and lots of amplification ( the good ones more than 70 db (= +- 5000 x ))
Line inputs have impedance that is 10 times higher so about 20000 ohm and you also don't have to make the signal stronger so amplification is about 1
Instrument inputs have verry high impedance ( 1000000 ohm ) and also lots of amplification but not as much as a micpre .
Phono inputs have impedance depending on the elements used ( for an Stanton 500 AL 2 47000ohm and 275 pF ) and have frequency dependant amplification ( riaa )
But you should forget about this and simply try what works and use your ears . Good luck recording .
Greetings Dirk .

If you're line in is optical. It means that the input signal is digital.
So a normal analogue mic won't do.
You can always build a small circuit that converts the analogue signal to a digital on and then to optical but i think you'd prefer taco's.
Btw: what kind of MD do you have that has a digital input I'd always thought you could only put digital music on an MD by USB because of some copyright thing.

He means red-white cables, presumably cinch-cinch rca cables.

Well put
Most shitty equipment uses RCA (cinch) plugs, while most good equipment uses XLR plugs

ah, found my md (sony mz-r55) back, and the manual says: you can make ONE digital copy from something (cd, dvd (well, the audio then), pre-recorderd md's, dat,..) but you can't make a digital copy of that md, it has to go trough analog equipment.
my sony mz-r55
needs a cable like this to be able to record from mixer, or to play on the system
