hi i thought i'd start a thread about the direction in which we all feel we're heading.
No matter what point you're at with your music, regardless of your experience...
you're heading somewhere with it
i guess everyone would have interesting ideas to put here about what you want to try and change, what you want to keep the same in the world of DnB.
maybe you don't know where you're heading ?

I honestly dont really know. I just wanna make music that I like, wheter it's DnB or any other music. But on the other hand, I also feel like I want to make music that other people enjoy as well...
But I also want to creat music that noone ever has created, so I want to be original. My cousin told me that if you want to be creative, you have to listen to a totally diffirent style of music then the style you are producing in. And I think he's right. He has quite a lot of experience with making music, and he's also the one that got me into producing at all! But I dont think I'm answering your question here
I think it's my goal to take chill-out-DnB to another level
, and we'll see if Im capable of that...
But I dont want to make chill-out-DnB all the time, I also feel like I should make diffirent music then that. What I would like to see, is more live stage concerts. Like you have all these great producers at a party, but they just DJ there. They don't really play live... I knot that there are live DnB performances, but I'd like to see people like Dieselboy, or Roni Size, or whoever perform live. Don't get me wrong, DJing is really cool, and I think that great producers can make a great mix, and really can make great partys. But I'd like to see more on stage action.
But I dont know, may be I'm saying something that can never be done in real life or whatever
I dont have that much experience with it yet.
Why don't you give your opinion, additive?

I cross-over all the time. but my main Influence is Dub. other, verry present in my stuff are Jazz and DnB. and then from time to time I go crazy on pop-rock-core-psycho-funk-metal-industrial-country-bleus-latin experiences.
My Dubwise knowlegde is the most developed in cases of sequencing. so i'm aiming slightly in that direction.
but you never know what the future may bring
cheers

cool cool, this is a really good start...
i don't know where i'm heading yet, i'm really undecided..
i think my main drama is that i've listened to loads and loads of different styles of DnB and i like mostly every subgenre so much, i'm stuck on which i would like to specialise in. there's things i don't like in most of the subgenres, and i guess what i'm looking for is my niche between subgenres where the things i don't like in two or three genres are taken away, and i'm left with just the sounds and effect i like. (i figure that if i really like something there has to be other people in the world who like it too)
I've been playing around a lot with lounge-chill, mixed with a bit of trancey sounds (because i like trancey stuff when i get high).. i'm looking for that rolling sound rather than spleen-jerking jumpiness....
but on the same hand, i find a lot of chilled DnB doesn't roll so much, more like it goes round and round in circles.
i'd like to see DnB really move into house-parties. smaller venues, where the sound is tighter, and people can choose to spin out
or jump
maybe movie-style drama in my music... ?
on a more personal note, i'm taking this seriously as my future, rather than working in a factory for 40 years, which is probably my other option in life. i hope my contributions to the music in society can pay for my survival.
something that always plays on my mind is; maybe i don't have the raw talent and skill of a genius to make it in the competitive world of music, and maybe no matter how much hard work i put in, i may never be the 'best' simply because i wasn't gifted.. but then i wonder... if you love something enough and you are prepared to put in the work, you can still come out on top. i mean, an olympian with the dream, didn't get there without the hard work... not too many of the musicians who have made it came out of the womb gifted with the skills of being able to translate what they're feeling into their instrument. it took loads and loads of work. talent vs hard work is a difficult one for me, because it scares me that the hard work might be wasted.

I dont think you should really pick a genre of drum n bass & say im going to produce 'techstep' or whatever, although i think its good to have some direction with where you wanna go with your tunes, I think sometimes it can end holding you back particularly if you are trying to make a tune that sounds like something else. at the moment im not trying for any particular style of d&b except that I want it to have a kind of alien feel to it.
I think you what you are saying about being gifted is true, some people do just have a natural talent for music but i do think if you are prepared to put the time and effort in to it & you are willing to learn then it doesn't matter where you come from or what you have done in the past - do you come from a musical background or are you coming in the producing game with little musical knowledge like myself?
I dont think there is any point in dwelling on what may or may not happen in the future because there are never any guarantees, particularly in the music business. The best thing to do is concentrate on making music now & learning as much as you can about as many things as you can.

Roni Size definitely has a live thing going on. All you have to do 2 see it is visit breakbeat.co.uk and search for it. He's got Krust and Die up on stage with him on samplers and shit along with a live bassist, drummer, MC Dynamite, Tali, and another vocalist from his Reprazent project.

it takes alot of insight to plan or see very far ahead.
my perpose is to create beutey or display some sort of power in my music if i can.
hmmm... lately i am focusing more on harmony and balance in all things so its hard to say.
ive had big dreams and made big plans but they all didnt go according to plan because i was lacking in understanding.
maybe the future is an illusion and the only real solidity is in the past that the father of your present?
therefor we must focus on balance and being instead of future and doing?
^what do you think what i just said here?

After ten years of doing this, experimenting with almost every genre out there, and constantly progressing my talent and knowledge....I think I'm heading in a really dark, heavy, and distorted direction. I'm a really dark, mysterious person....so I guess my music is kind of a reflection of my deepest self. I dabble in lighter stuff everynow and then....especially when I'm just not feeling all that dark.....but for the most part.....I'm definately heading in a very distorted, decrepid, and desolate direction. CREEPY MUSIC RULES!!!!

The world can be a very sinister place, is's only natural for us to want to explore the darkness and try to represent it in art form. Painters, photographer& musicians have been doing it for years & we can all have some feeling towards it. some people revere it, some people reslish it, some people are scared of it & some people are disgusted by it. There is dark place within all of us, it can be deeper in some than others but its there, which is why we are all drawn to it in some way or another.

I experiment with everything, with my life, with my girlfriend (even the embarassing experiments
), with my music, with my drawing...
I mix (in music) the jazz instruments, but I don't do jazz step or something. I just use them in my own way, experimenting with forms and harmony. Strangely, but very few songs that were made by me I dislike, and mainly those were the tunes on which I didn't provide much effort in producing.
I constantly, say to everyone to experiment, to listen to experimental music, to attach dead rats to a wall as a form of art, because that's the surest and the fastest way we're going to develop.
Watch this: when I draw, make visual arts, I draw apocalyptic art, and that's my main occupation. But I like my tunes to be sweet and melodic, u know what I mean... I mostly connect them with post-apocalyptic development and life... the Golden Path...
So I'm a story... you can learn from me, or ignore me, but I do exist...
So people...
EXPERIMENTING, EXPERIMENTING, EXPERIMENTING, EXPERIMENTING, EXPERIMENTING, EXPERIMENTING, EXPERIMENTING, EXPERIMENTING, EXPERIMENTING, EXPERIMENTING, EXPERIMENTING, EXPERIMENTING, EXPERIMENTING, EXPERIMENTING, ...
Let me see if I typed it enough... Here, a two more EXPERIMENTING, EXPERIMENTING!
Experiment with everything!
