For Drum&bass music there are only 2 synths you need ( well I think so ) :
1 The Roland Alfajuno 1/2/MKS 50 . These synths make the best hoovers and reeses . ( The Dominator sound is a factory preset !!! )
2 The Studio Electronics SE1-x . Its verry verry close to the sound quality of a minimoog and can be made a lot more snappy by changing just 1 resistor . The sound is even a bit less clean than a real minimoog . It has 2 kind of filters ( Oberheim & Moog ) , 4 envelopes , 3 midi synced LFO's a ringmodulator , noise and 3 VCO's .
There are only 4 synths I know of that sound better than a SE1-x : The Roland system 700 ; The Moog modulairs ; The Minimoog and the Minimoog voyager .
The sound quality of these synths is miles ahead of every vst or virtual analoge synth today .
If your sound is not right from the start you can't fix it anymore later on in the chain . Magic does not exist . See here for my explanation Secret of good sound
Greetings Dirk .

Indeed, but soundquality wise, those oldskool hardware units moslty just sound a lot better...

that's true but I think that sounds that you can tweak on these machines are overused and you hardly make anything new on them.

I've also heard lots of tunes made on reason and similar low-tech machines that sounded pretty well. I don't argue that difference between old analogue machines and vst isn't recognizible, but still I think skills are more imporant then gear. anyway this theme was flamed so many times that this is my last reply here about this

Cant believe no one mentioned Vanguard.
This synth is totally awesome for dnb! It's easy to use (one of the easiest i have used) and can produce a lot of different sounds. The trance gate feature is a nice touch as well.
Since i started using it, i have reckognised it in loads of tunes...
Deffinately reccomend for begginers!

For all those who want to create totaly new sounds . And the only digital synth that I want to buy .
And the best and most eazy to program digital synth ever made ( modulair synths are very simple to program once you know what the in and outputs of all the modules do )
clavia G2 Demo
And here a link to the man who learned me everything I know about synthprogramming .
Rob Hordijk G2 intro
On this site you can learn how to make your own filters and you must see the part on recirculators .
greetings Dirk .
