Main sounds? Erm, there 'r plenty!
Most imporant (for me) is the reece
2 detuned saws, lowpassed and distorted (mostly). Use as bassline
Or a beating bassline: 808 kick with distortion. Use as bassline offcourse
Then you have the hoovers offcourse

Hmmm, complex question
How do we make melodies? Dunno, I think of how I want it to go, and then I play it that way
How loud should the bass be? Loud enough to be heard, not too loud coz then it'll overpower the other stuff

i think this is more a question about human nature than production.
hum a tune randomly. make it played in an instrument.
that's what my guitar techer taught me. first beable to just mumble the tune out loud, hum, beat box, whistle, than transcribe it to noise.
don't use chords for melodies, it's usually a monophic note pattern.
chords are for verses.

use your eyes as well as your ears
i have crappy speakers too, so i look at myr channel output displays to see how loud the bass is
also i like to play my track in windows media player with the bars&waves->scope visualisation as a quick way to visualy check volumes, clipping and waveshapes ect

//preshious edit button.
here ill tell you how,
make a slow melodty with stinged isntruments or pads, start with just one synth string or pad.
it could have like 4 or 8 difforent note or wut ever, just somthing that is slow and displays a mood.
now you can take that paturn (if you have FL use save score function of piano roll)
and you can add what i think is called "suspention".
harmoniously play multiple notes at the same time while leaving the orignonals.
or you can add "gated" notes, like more rapidly played notes that fallow the slower melody.
thats one way of starting.
keep repeating the main slow melody with but keep playing new chords over it or switching what instruments are used or keep adding slight aulterations of 1 or two keys.
there^ thats one example of buolding a dnb melody.
often the pads are like "half time", you have a fast tempo (bpm) on ur song but the pads are slow.
thats what makes jungle sound "chill",
fast exiting drums let slow and cool melodys.
the main instruments of DnB, in essance usualy
about "chill" sounding pads and strings, or "sick"
sounding distorted synths.
you can use leads, reeces, strings, pads, rap.
all these and more as main themes over or beneath the beat.
but know this : DnB is a foundational principal of mood dispaly, a stlye of music, a genre.
for this reason it has almos infinint room for variety.
basicly fast rollin beats are ahrmonious with the melody and at present DnB instrumentation maily revolves around virtual (synth) instrumentation.
but i like orchistral jungle, its difforent cause you use lots of orchistral strings in your breaks + more ambiantce oriented vritual sound and effects.
such a braud questinon requires a complex or braud answer. maybe ive made some mastakes here.
