Anyone worked with these buggars?
They're told to be harsch-sounding so they reveal the ugly truth in mixes/tracks.
I'm about to buy a pair of these, so if you feel the need to drop some philosophical/metafysical point of view, this is the place.

Seem quite nice, but if they do sound harsh, you might turn up making your tracks sound too soft and not agressive enough...

Aggressivenes comes from a deeeeep place within, those speakers ain't gonne stop that...
No no, you think so?
I reckon that it's a good basis to rely on, you make tracks, they (should) sound good on these speakers, and afterwards, it's testing the final result on different speakers&systems.
I think it's far more better to have these very neutral (at least, i hope so) sounding speakers then something coloured.
I posted this question/topic on other boards as well, curious what the responses will be.
Perhaps Dirk and thechronic can help me out here.

fm-mag tested them in last month's issue: best for accuracy, and session best; session also considered genelec 1029a, mackie hr624 and tapco s5. so I guess they are good in their price range. the review also mentioned the harshness however. also keep in mind most reviews are for rock etc.
although, dnb-> 8" monis better? or extra woofer?

I drool incessantly on Mackie!!
Playboy and Hustler Magazine fade away like an icecube in the Sahara in comparison.
Man, i heard those mackies 824 somewhere, and honestly, they suck!!! Cuz they make bad records even sound good!
Yeah, i read the Future Magazine, but for producin dnb, a subwoofer might be a good idea, yeah.
Anyway, i can buy them for less than half the price, so..... i guess the dices already rolled.

half price
, what the hell are you doubting about
they were already quite cheap in their range, and as for bass response: a 50 Hz sub, i find it tricky to hear (i have no woofer, but 8" moni); i usually stand up from my sweetspot, and take 3 steps backwards, and then it hits you
. Don't know if 5" have the same effect.
but still i found 5" small, don't know how to describe, but was not only in bass response, anyway, don't know for sure, not an expert. But i guess these are quite the chance

Yeah, gonna buy them, don't have the financial means to buy mackies or anything, so the yamaha's will be mine...
You have any idea what the main criteria/issues are concerning a woofer connected to monitors? Cuz i would think that adding a woofer might easily fuck up the neutral sound.
I guess you have to look for some 'reference'-cd's or vinyl.

Indeed, chances of that are very big. If you want a seperate subwoofer, I think you will have to pay a specialist to come and install it correctly...
But my passive Monitor One Mk2's are more than enough for doing the rough mastering of a home mix, evethough they only have flat responce down to 45hz...

The flatter the better u can master on them (theoretically anyway). Problem is that most people are used to having speakers with their own specific sound. So when mastering on a pair of monitors u have to take care not to turn the bass up too much, because it will be the only thing left on systems with heavy sub. on the other hand on systems with bad lofreq it could sound to sharp. But with some practice u should be able to master your music in such way it will sound good an nearly any system. That is impossble to do if u master on speakers with their own sound.

Think i'll marry these substitute women...
Yesterday muphasta, also a dnb-member, came along with a newly achieved outstanding jazz-collection he got from his grandfather. The records are in mint condition, and playing them thru these speakersn was like an angel whispering and singing in my ears...
Maybe you should wish the me the best in my relationship with my girlfriend, cuz she surely will notice the difference in the pre-yamaha msp5 and post-yamaha msp5 era....

prepare for the: 'sometimes i think you like your monitors more than me' arguments, and the 'you only come downstairs to eat, for the rest your always behind your pc', they will get used to it though
prepare for a great production quality rise, although you also probably think all your previous tracks sound like crap on the new system

.
just make sure you have an isolated room, far away from the tv (and thus girlfriend
). no more late night sessions for me though, i'm probably the only one here who writes most of his tracks on a sundaymorning .
