thinking about getting "this" condenser mic, for recording.
it doesn't need phantom power which is good because i have no preamp, and is roughly 200 pounds money wise. i think . . .
any ways, i dunno, i just need it for vocals mostly and not omnidirection would help because it'll pic up less background sounds....
anyone got suggestions for a cheap and good vocal mic? dynamic or condenser.

Dunno very much about recording techniques, but if you're planning to use it just for vocals maybe it is better to invest in a high-quality handheld mic?

i don't care if it's handheld or not, i am not singing live. and dynamics are usually better for that.

!! This mic needs phantom power like every condenser mic...and i picks up alot of background noises !! If you're looking for a vocal mic you better buy a dynamic shure sm 58 or something (senheisers are good budget vocal mics). But notice that condenser mics have more possibilities...

but this one isn't a set cardio mic, it also does bi- uni- pickup.
thus it doesn't pick up every little sound, right?
probably more for instrument recording. i thought dynamics are more for live recordings?

Check out an AKG c1000 or a 3000.....just as good if not better than the rode....cheaper as well!!!! i had a 1000 but ive used both b 4.......the 1000 is ideal if you havent got a vocal both or dead room.....picks up very little backround noise
it is phantom powered but can run off battery as well

It's a bad idea to use handheld mics for recording, I would always use cradled condenser mics.
If you do want to buy a handheld, get the Neumann KMS105. It's really good, I don't want to use anything else anymore.
I wouldn't advise on using SM58's for recording, they are not clear enough in the high end, it is essentially a cheap live mic.
Also the AKG C1000 is not really suitable. The C3000 will do.
Reasons not to use handheld mics for recording:
1. singing too close to the mic causes enhanced proximity effect, popping, noises when their lips touch the mic etc
2. you get handling noise
3. if the vocalist hasn't learned good microphone technique your levels are often varying a lot
4. people tend to put their hands over the capsule, completely screwing up the sound
5. handheld mics usually don't sound very good
Tips for recording vocals:
1. use a cradled condenser mic, the best you can get
2. keep a distance from the mic (20-40 cm)
3. sing a bit off-axis, not directly into the mic
4. use a pop shield to mark the distance
5. don't turn up the volume in the headphones too much or it will leak into the microphone
If you have background noise and the mic doesn't pick it up it must be a crappy microphone lol. Record in a quiet environment, that seems pretty logical.
And to answer your question, yes I think the Rode would be a good idea, but it will need phantom or a seperate power supply.

Lol, I recorded my upcoming Tragic Error release with a handheld crappy mic
But we did do some noise reduction, he didn't do steps 1 and 4 wrong
And he did steps 2, 3 and 5 of the tips right
I always turn the treble in the headphones down, since it's mostly those sounds that leak into the mic...
