ey!

my current headphones are broken and I am thinking of investing into something more decent, after few hours of reading reviews and comparing some products I decided to choose these :

akg k271
http://www.akg.com/mediadatabase/pspic/h...55cb629deb7.jpg
[edit : i guess it's better just to put link here Smile ]
some details :
http://www.headphone.com/layout.php?spec...ctID=0020120271

I'd like to ask before I'll buy them if it's good choice.. currently I don't have enough money to buy proper monitor - speakers, and also becouse of my neighbors I can't listen to speakers when I want to and as loud as I want to..

If anyone [The Chronic for example Bigup ] has some tips for mixing with headphones It will be much appreciated..

Thanx for any advices tips and help. Cheers

I don't know much about HPs, but I guess the non-flat frequency responce is quite normal.

I have these: http://www.headphone.com/layout.php?topi...ctID=0020080497
The Frequency responce curve seems a bit better, but they're so much cheaper I guess they're not as good.

But for a lil bit more money, you can have some nice passive Alisis Monitor One Mk2 speakers (like I have) wich are very good for their price and should help you out for the moment. And you don't HAVE to play them loud Wink

I know I don't have to play it loud but to passive monitors I have to buy also proper amp and friend of mine will give me good price about 170$ including tax normally they costs 240$ with tax here.

question is if low-end speakers are better then high-end headphones.. ?

don't think you can go wrong with the akg-model... i don't really know/heard that one but akg have an excellent reputation.

Im the proud owner of sennheiser HD 600 for my latenight sessions. They sound amazing imo. very 'spatial' (ruimtelijk/analytisch). very comfortable to wear for long periods (i sometimes even forget i have 'em on untill i trip over the cord Smile ).

I have to say that i always check shizl in the morning out loud (no headphones)to make adjustments.

i agree with Surya that you might wanna check proper monitors (like the one's he suggested) instead of headphones.

I agree with you both, but I don't think that for 200$ I will have really proper monitors. I will still have mine speakers and hifi to check my work, altough I can't trust them too much becouse their quite cheap.

go with the headphones man........they are killer!! as long as you still have a system to test your shit on.......those headphones look very nice........one question though.......why didn't you go with the K501's for 10 dollars more? they aren't sealed.....but their frequencey response is better on the low end......which is something you need!!

the headphones you're getting are more for acoustic sound.......it says orchestral sounds are really nice through it........but the bass is lacking

Thanx for tip supleyq ! I will consider this, the problem with these k501 may be that they are 120ohm so I guess I will have to purchase some headphone amp to power them properly and that are additional money.. Frequency response look better indeed. I never had sealed headphones so I don't know really if it does affect sound anyhow. From what I've read it seems that sealed headphones has a bit "compressed" sound comparing to open-ones but also reviews says that this is not the case with K271 model. There are also different views on k271 bass sound. Some people say it is lacking bass some say that it's clean and my friend today told me that they are quite bass-heavy comparing to his sennheiser hd590.
actually I don't need my head to resonate with "tight" bass it should be more analytical so I can mix bassdrum with subs properly for example...
damn it's tough decision Smile

yea, i forgot, k271 is good choice if I will record some vocals in future like I did with Nicol for example.. The noise from headphones will be not recorded..

Well, I suggested the cheap monitors coz I just can't master properly on headphones. I can do it on cheap monitors though.

its not ideal to master on reference monitors or headphones. I master on my club system outside in my backyard Big Grin but i havent done that in a while. it really does work good but what a pain in the ass. Im getting ready to move back to california and when i get there ill be spending a bit more to get my studio room dialed in proper this time with a set of high end hi fi speakers for mastering and my ref monitors.

I wouldn't master on PA's man, they don't have flat curves so you could end up with unwanted frequencies

well actually until now, I was using technics rpf300 and you are right that they are quite loud, but that's not the point of good studio headphones. They are more usual for Djing but their frequency response and detail and analytical possibilities are much lower then in studio headphones.

Just so we are clear here, there isnt a pro mastering engineer out there that masters on ref monitors. dont ask me why cuz im not to sure but i just know that they dont use em. ref monitors are for mixdown and production. I think it might have something to do with the low output but still i am unsure about it.
maybe the chronic could shed some light on this.

501, are actully the ones recomended for accuracy. i'd say , in a marketing view, this msut their middle ground ones, and by that standard, anything more would be wasting money, and anything less is not worth it.

hell i tihnk i am gunna get a pair of thoes.

but what is the deal with amps? do you need headphone amps really?
