clipping is what happens when you turn something up too loud........the tops of the waveforms get "clipped" off. this can come in handy sometimes......if you have a waveform that you can't maximize because of a single spike that goes too high......you just clip it!!!.....usually just a soft clip will do it. but yeah......clipping is just clipping the tops of the waveform off!!

Try it: open a wave in a wave editor, normalize it, and then boost the volume another 500%: it will sound distorted in a particular way.

Now zoom in on the wave form and you will see that the loudest parts are clipped off.

digital clipping is very very bad. digital clipping happins when you have a mixer channel that hits over 0db, not a good thing. when you layout a track its best to keep all your mixer channels from peaking out and run your main mix below -4 db. this gives you plenty of room for mastering. if some thing isnt loud enough and the only way to get it sitting right is to boost the gain which in turn clipps the master then add compression to bring it out more. sometimes small peaks in the audio eats up headroom too, you can fix this by adding a limiter to that channel and limit it just enough to keep the nasty little peaks under control.

clipping is when a frequency is too loud and extends pass your softwares wave editor thingy...its a sort of small over laod and casues distortion...quite annoying and can be very dangerous to speakers...
