i feel a little stupid asking this but what is a tr-amen??
i know about the origins of the amen break an i been to jungle breaks.com and downloaded the amen break, but what is a tramen, is it the second section of the break of another totally different one??

furthur more i'm alittle confused over the usage of the amen, when its played it has that trademark sound of a thrashin cymbal ride and a very trebley feel, do people use this particular break or are there loads of variations on the amen but using different instruments.

i guess what i mean is do people just apply fx n that to it or are there some good/wellknown breaks that use the same elements arranged in the same way.

hope this makes sense
thanks Bigup
G

mostly it's just FX......after you slice up the amen......you can re-arrange it any way you want.....and can add any FX you want.......high pass it so it's just the crashing cymbals.......low pass it so it's just the booming bd......distort it so it slashes your ear drums.......whatever you prefer

the Tramen (or Firefight) is the Amen layered with another popular break.....I forget which one......surya can tell ya......or someone else who gets to it first.....the amen is probably the most widely used break though.....aside from maybe drummer's beat and apache......it's really good stuff!!!

that would be the samurai-break.
But i heard amens combined with totally different breaks than the samurai and they rocked as well. There still no rules in musicmaking (or rather, very few) so maybe you should go and try to layer an amen with any other break. You'll be surprised with the results, i know for sure.

From the FAQ:

quote:
What is a Firefight?

Also sometimes called a Tramen or Tracy Amen (called after Trace, who reportedly created it first). It's a classic drum 'n' bass break which is a combination of a pitched down Amen and a Samurai break. Check the breaks samplepack in the downloadssection for an example of the Firefight break.

How do I make a Firefight?

Well, the same way Trace did: take a chopped up Amen, a chopped up Samurai or Tighten Up (they're essencially the same) and do some layering, rearanging and soundprocessing on it. Experiment!
If it doesn't work out, you can offcourse download one of the many Firefight samples on the net and chop that up. Always give it your own touch!!!

thanks peeps!!

what do most of u do, cut it into 8 or 16 sections??
i've only ever cut breaks into 4 parts, but then again i've never used em really only lately i'v been expanding my knowledge on the correct usage on breaks, or at least to my standards.
i simply won't use them unless i feel i canmanipulate them enough to make them 1.interseting and 2. mine!!!!

cheers

G

I cut them in every hit I can hear. That's 8ths for most of the parts, 16ths were there are ghosts.

i dont chop up any amen breaks, proly why mine sound like crap lol...(also cause i dont know how Tongue ) but yea there are soem amens here and there in the sample packs, but surya says they sound like crap and need an ass load of layering to sound good...and hes right...BUT you can work with them pretty nicely...as far as effects, ill either add some distortion and pitch them up or down and add some rides or something... not to mention a sort of metallicy kick almost...(sequence them in a tech step style break) i dont know names of any of them, i just make them lol... Pleased hope that helped lol...maybe it didnt ...

just for the record, Dom Angus (Dom & Roland) engineered the 'tramen'...Trace was just the first one to actually use it, then Ray Keith nicked it from the Trace tune... i believe Dom used an amen from some old hardcore tune, the Flow break, and either the Tighten Up or Samurai (dont remember which one exactly)...

most likely on top of eachother......keeping the BD's with the BD's and snares with the snares.......but I have sliced up multiple breaks before and used pieces from each as a home made crap kit! you can get some cool results from this!!
