I started making electronica nine years ago......and no one ever said mixdown back then. I'm wondering if you mean the sequencing......the actual programming of the track? Are you guys talking about the mastering session? Where all the eq'ing and leveling goes down? Or is there some special process I've been missing out on all these years?

I think it's mainly the levelling of all the sounds, to get one to be like just in the background, others more up front to get a nice and subtle play and spectrum of different sounds, and to get things to sound as one unity instead of a bunch of sounds thrown together. EQ'ing is like the next step then, but also goes along with it a bit.

i've always thought of it as all the fine tuning done to a track after programming it i.e.
-levels
-eq
-timing
-etc

the mixdown is nothing more than plainly getting the levels of your seperate tracks in to a good mix.
master is the final etching like eq, delay, limiting.
