hi guys

now i am back from my trip to germany. i am going to start work on a new project.
i would like to know what combination of prodution software you all use and recommend.
the tracks i have posted here have been done in FL4,
also i have made a some tracks in Reason 2 which i might post one soon.
will be good to hear what you think the best production suite is as im sure that there are strengths/weakenesses with just about everything........ over to you.

just use the one you're most comfortable with/know best. Neither fruity or cubase, or logic make sound, but it's the guy behind the pc who has to do it.

Anyway, i use fruity, cause i know it inside out now (almost that is). Haven't even tried something else, so i don't know what the limitations are.

for vst's i use z3ta+, occassionally something else. have a lot more, but limited to one lately, since this one i can manipulate best/easiest and it's the only one for which i read the manual Big Grin . For the other ones I usually tweak some presets, while in z3ta+, i can start from scratch.

Depends... I sometimes use Buzz, Reason 2.5 or Cubase, but it doesn't really matter as said above. Just use the one you know best, you will get better results faster this way...

See Buzzmachines.com for more info.

It's got a simple looking interface and it's not very userfriendly to start with, but it has TONS of free softsynths and effects, + VST and DX support.

It works a bit in the same way as Reason: make chains of generators and effects...

Basic setup here : I'm using Reason 2, Recycle, some outboard effects and compression... and loads of samples. Reason 2.5 soon I hope. Smile The worst piece of gear I use is my generic Apple soundcard wich is, er.. so bad.

I'd use more gear if I had the money, yes. Pleased

I've used everything from Cubase (on my trust and rusty ST) to ProTools (on a Mac).

I currently use Sonar on PC and Buzz (http://www.buzzmachines.com).

I like Buzz cos it's free, the interface is a little horrendous unless you've used old skool sample trackers before but with use of the help files it doesn't take too long to get into. Can be a little unstable at times as well as some of the machines aren't too well written/computer friendly. Still it's great for creating new sounds from and saving them as sampled notes/riffs and importing into something else.

Big Grin

Oh I've got loads of outboard stuff as well - Roland Alpha Juno 1, TR606, MC202. Yamaha TG55, SPX50II, Alesis Multiverb, Freebass (TB303 clone), Boss DR660, Emu ESI32, 16 channel mixer & too many wires!

These days it all seems a little unnecissary though but I like the feel of real knobs n sliders under my fingers(!?!)

Fist things I would buy if I were you
- A midi controller keyboard (like M-Audio)
- A pair of studio monitors. Even cheap ones are better than any hifi stuff or PC speakers.
- A descent soundcard (like the M-Audio Delta series)

This will help you with hearing if your sound is good and the keyboard will help you find good melodies faster.

And get a bunch of software synths and effects... and start experimenting... and don't hope to have a killer track within the first months...

Thanks for the tip. I dont expect a bomb track right of the bat. I just wwant to get some ideas down. Big Grin

The software is another thing i tried downloading buzz last nite and for some reason i cant get it to work does it require a midi controller of some sort or is it really that unstable?

ive heard that reason has bad sound so i was wondering if there were any quirks in the cubase sx i should know about it before i dump the money Knownothing
Thnaks for your help and patience

For Buzz: look in the helpfile, there's a step by step tutorial which should get you started.

The sound in Reason is NOT bad, there are just little soundoptimizing tools (there is one 2-band EQ... that's it) which doesn't make it easy to get good sound, but the sound isn't bad.

What you should know about Cubase: get the SL version (not the SE version, which is really trimmed down) since it doesn't have a lot of functions you won't use anyway, but it has everything you don't need. So it's less resource heavy and cheaper, and you won't notice the difference.
About the program itself: it's easy as pie. Really fun and intuitive to use!!!
