DJ Mutiny Biography

As a London teenager obsessed with hip-hop, old soul, jungle and his guitars, DJ Mutiny was introduced to the world of music production through a friend at college who had a very old and basic PC studio... Immediately transfixed, Mutiny suddenly found himself locked in a world of beats, staying awake into the early hours learning the ropes.

After college and into paid employment, Mutinymanaged to scrape some money together to buy an Akai S3000xl. He started to put together a little project studio, consisting of the sampler, a Yamaha digital desk, a Proteus 2000 sound module and, later, a Novation Supernova pilfered off Deekline and some compressors. Having started producing drum'n'bass, DJ Mutiny moved into breakbeat after a brief flirtation with the darker, experimental side of garage (his earliest release, 'Combat', in 1999, was an experimental electro-jungle-meets-garage roller that, while fairly badly engineered, was pretty groundbreaking for the time!)

Meanwhile the breakbeat scene was asserting itself, with the likes of FreQ Nasty and Chris Carter putting out some incredible tracks. Furthermore, people like Deekline were starting to bring breaks to the pirate radio audience, opening up a whole new arena.Mutiny's first breaks release was 'Latin Break' (Dig the Funk EP) on Deekline's SubFunk label in early 2001.

Soon after, Mutinyhooked up with like-minded West London producer DJ Quest. Working together on Cyberfunk and Funkatech, they released a whole host of quality bass-driven tracks such as Mutiny's 'Soul Deception' and '4-Play', Quest's 'Electric Love' and 'Fuct Beat' and L-Jay's 'Nu Wayz'.

Mutinynow owns and runs Funkatech Recordings. The label continues to be a pioneer in the breaks scene. The current release, DJ Mutiny ft Miss Trouble - Whatchu Gonna Do, has been received support from most of the big names in breaks, including Plump DJs, Freestylers, Aquasky, Tayo, Friendly, Rennie Pilgrem, Chris Carter, Deekline, Autobots, BreakFastaz, Deep Impact, Sunz of Mecha, Darqwan, DJ Quest, Phantom Beats, Jay Cunning and Skool of Thought.

Meanwhile Dj Mutiny has been busy with a number of releases out and forthcoming on other reputable breaks labels, including:

- Supercharged (Dj Mutiny feat. Amaziree - 'Resistance' / DJ Mutiny - 'Art of Fighting'; DJ Quest feat. IC3 - 'Floorbasher (DJ Mutiny vs Uncouth Youth remix))'
- Hardcore Beats (DJ Mutiny vs Shopliftas - 'Daily Operation' / DJ Mutiny vs L-Jay - 'No Compromise')
- Wireframe (DJ Mutiny - 'War on the Streets' / 'Synthetic')
- Mechanoise (Mutant Yoof - 'Malaga Airport' / 'Sidewinder')
- Cyberfunk (DJ Mutiny EP - 'The Distance', 'Complex Man', 'Let Go', 'Eyes to the Lies').

He is getting an increasing number of DJ bookings in Europe, and this christmas sees his second tour of Australia / New Zealand.

Dj Mutiny also plays regularly on Breaks FM and Pyrotechnic Radio, in addition to guest slots on various internet and pirate radio stations. He is due to do a guest slot on Tayo's prestigious Kiss FM show in the next couple of months.
