just read this (in dutch). artists such as beenieman, buju banton, elephantman, capleton etc. are being cancelled from festivals due to their 'homophobic lyrics' ...

anyway, think they are grossly exagerating, but their is some truth in it (although for different artist). in jamaica; concert i saw (on tv) once; artist calling out to 'kill them naughty boys!'. but it's part of their culture, why others would someone call himself elephantman too. it's a thin line, but some organisations are abbusing it. I don't think beenieman will kill some gay people Big Grin

Well - knowing a few gay guys & girls - I can understand that they wouldn't like it, but it is a bit exagurated to block them completely from festivals.
I however have also serious doubts about the intelligence of those artists when they're singing such things...

This just proves stupid people still exist - on both sides of the fence... Roll Eyes

Don't know the rasta scene very well myself, but I heard similar stories from people who do. I thought it was all about freedom, tolerance, peace and a smoke, but this spirit seems to be lost with a lot of people.

It sort of al started with rudebwois TOK's 2002 hit 'Chi-chi Man'. This record put the sparkle in the flame. Ever since the discussion on homo-hatred is burning hot.
But it found it's roots in the Shabba Ranks breakthrough in the 90-ies with 'Mr. Loverman'.
And now? Concert-promoters stop putting big Jamaican names on their lin-up, some pro gay/lesbian-organisations are trying to forbid the sales of certain records/artists.

There's a nice article in a new Belgian r'n'b-rap-reggae mag called IIIR (3R), check it out.

Ah, i see. I at first thought that the hatecore you mentioned had something to do/was a spin-off from ragga/dancehall/... But yes indeed, there are some quite militant right-winged hardcore groups. And the strange thing is, is that oi-music (skinheads/skins), not exactly being the most softest music of all, has quite some fashist and racist and/or extremist points of view. But the oi-music is rooted in the british ska-scene (madness, selecter,...) and as we all know, ska is rooted in rocksteady which was a rhythmical alternative for the easier-feelin' one-drop reggae groove. Strange how people can use the same medium for far different messages.
