Depends what you're after...
Midi controller?
Headphones?
Sound card?
Monitors?
Ukulele?

Headphones & monitors in particular.

But I'd like to learn more about brand reputations.

Somewhere on the internet I read,
'Ain't got highs?
Ain't got lows?
Must be Bose!'
& that Klipsch and Polk are better.
I also read that Bose is all marketing and crap quality.
And I have to say, I have a pair of Bose speakers and I don't get really deep bass rendering on them.
On the other hand, it's a well-known & expensive brand, so anyone that comes into my room will see that my speakers are Boses. Which is nice.

Also, I have bad experiences with Sennheiser; today I brought my MM400 headphones back to the Geronika repair sevice for the third time, it had a beep in one speaker when I turned on the Bluetooth function.

So I'd like to know, what the best brands are, which brand delivers the best (sound) quality.

I've always had (and liked) my Sennheizers.

Bose? Haven't tried the headphones. Their surround systems are shyte. All systems with tiny satelites and a big woofer are shyte, as they have to let the woofer also do the higher base notes, while a woofer should only take care of the sub, of course. And Bose always does this. Their subs are cut of @300hz. Which means voice is coming trough the woofer. Big nono.

Bose is one of those brands that has stuff that looks and sounds, to the average person as being superior, so they get away with charging more, just because of their name. But I would never buy their stuff.

For regular speakers I'd always go B&W!!! 683 looks nice and sounds VERY good too!

You mean sets like the Companion 2.

I recently bought the Companion 2 series 2 for €100. No subwoofer.

It gives an ok bass but the really high bass and the really low bass don't come out the way they should imo.

Well, yeah, my series 2 sound quite good to me... Anyway, I bought them with the intention of putting them besides my bed at my grandma's house, but I've kept them in my room til now; if I find a better set I could buy those and take the Boses to my gran.

You mean these, right?

The brand is well-known to music lovers, but the 683's are too big for me. Don't want loud noise anymore, got a tinnitus in my right ear.

For production you should either go for studio monitors or quality headphones.
The more affordable monitors are still quite expensive (Yamaha, KRK) the cheap ones (e.g. Beringher) are not worth the money.
I have Yamaha monitors, active ones, this means that the amplifier is built in and thus perfect for the job.
For headphones I am happy with Sennheiser HD280 pro.

For entertainment on a normal PC I recently listened to a speaker system that had really good sound for their price: Edifier 2.1 Soundsystem C2 Plus for only €80 it gives a great value for money. Never tried to produce on them though.

Thanks for the tip, but the system has a subwoofer, not a fan of those.

What's your opinion on Bose BD?

They're not that big to be loud (allthough they can be). They're that big because they need that volume to give a balanced sound at all volume levels. They're perfectly fine for listening at low levels too!

But yes, for producing you don't need these, you need studio monitors. Get Mackie if you can afford them Smile

They are always trying to be smart (surround sound with 2 speakers and such things) and they are overpriced in my opinion.
Never heard any stuff from them.

For producing you can forget about them.

So.
My Bose Companion 2 series 2 pc-speakers don't render the third note of the bassline in Morning Light, and in ED209 the bass is just not rendered at all.
Where does 'nitpicking' end and 'crap sound' begin?

Companion is fine for the average PC user, for producing, they are horribly insufficient.
