Good evening,

I've come to see you concerning a background hiss problem I have recently encountered.
I work on FL Studio, publish a song, and when I cut the lows and highs on the final product (after having published the song), there is an annoying hiss in the background. I'm in Europe, so I applied a 50hz hum filter, thinking this might be the problem, but to no avail. I am connected to the ground, but I'm not sure that has anything to do with it.

My configuration is well balanced, and my sound card is an Asus Xonar Essence ST. I am very surprised to see that there is a background hiss, normally this happens only on recordings !

FL Studio is not a trial version, and none of the plugins are demo versions either. I don't know whether it's all the noise from the processor or video card doing this, but in any case, it's quite a pain to deal with.

Would any of you happen to know what digital or manual configuration I could do to make this horrible hiss go away ?

Further info: OS - Windows 7 x64
Asio4all

Thank you ! Smile

Is the hiss coming and going or is it constant?

Is the hiss only coming up on your tracks? Might be exporting in really low quality... what are you current export settings?

Hey,
During the intro drum loop, I hear the hiss clearly, but when all the instruments come in, it gets lost in the mix.
I'm exporting at 512 point sinc, 32 bit wav. I then master, export again as 32 bit wav and convert to mp3, but it's during the first export that there is the hiss. Frown

Thanks again!

If you export as a simple 320kbps mp3 instead, does it have hiss then?

BattleDrone,
Even when I export as mp3 in 320 kbps, there is still that background hiss, it is most noticeable around 500Hz. I did a silence loop and it was there as well, so it's not a timbre or sample-related hiss. I'm thinking it might be the sound card ?
But so many people have said good things about the Xonar Essence that I wonder if it might be a badly connected cable ?
Any ideas ?

Impact,
Normally there is an anti-magnetic cage around the card, but maybe there is a leak or something allowing electrical interference through...
If it is a fan/electrical interference, what do you suggest I do ?
Take the sound card out of the computer while publishing ? Turn off the fans ?

disconnect the fans first.
test.

reconnect.

if its the PSU I dont know what to suggest... it wont be cheap.,... could also be a 'dry joint' on the circuit board of the soundcard- unlikely-but possible.

I covered all the fans, and turned off the computer screen itself, and the hiss is almost completely gone ! I think it might be coming from both the computer screen being on the same multi as the computer, but also from the fans.
How do I turn off all the fans ? I can only see the graphic card, mmouse, screen, etc. , but no fans (on the windows screen where there are all the computer's components).

Thanks !

You can use this software to control the speed of your fans:

BBear,
Thanks for the program, but can it de-activate all the fans or can it just slow them down ?

I'm not sure to be honest, but I think it can de-activate them.

It could be a grounding issue.
