anybody here has an idea on how i can replace my extremely noise pc-ventilator/fan? My pc goes like an F16, but unfortunately, i get the deafening sound there for free
- Can i replace it myself or should i get some sort of specialist involved?
- Does it matter what type/brand i take?
- Can i do something terribly wrong? (i'm good at that...)
- And finally: quanta costa?

usually there are several (at least 2) fans in a pc, one for the powerblock and one for the main cpu, there might be extras for graphic cards, mainboard chips, ... U could buy a new low noise "voeding", but that will cost some money. The other solution is to put in new fans. allthough the powerblok has all kinds of "do not open" warnings on it, u can open it & replace the fan by a more silent one if u are a bit handy with solder
(watch polarity!). Just make absolutely sure the power cord is disconnected or u might end up getting a 380V DC shock, not really healthy. For the cpu it might be necessary to replace the entire cooling block by a more silent version, better let someone with a little experience do that (heat conductive paste & stuff). u can do the same with the other fans if that would still be necesarry. Also note that some of the fans might not be necessary. Sometimes there are extra fans in the pc that are not necessary if the cpu & other chipfans do their work properly.
U can find regular fans in ur local electronics store, for a cpu cooler u will have to go see ur computer dealer.
edit: oowh yeah, watch out u buy the right size of fan, or it won't fit.

That somewhat sums it up indeed. Check from which fan the noise is coming, and replace thatone first...

Bloodstains and Fists of fury!! It's the CPU-fan! And it seems neatly stuck to the whole motherboard. Gonna have to do some serious unscrewing. Guess i'll have hand it over to some pc-repair shop, if i'm gonna try&do this, you won't hear anything from me for a loong time...
But thanx for the tips.

That's quite normal, it must be connected to the cpu real tight in order to achieve optimal heat conduction. Normally there's some kind of click-system though. Check again & check ur motherboard manual if u have one.

If you haven't removed a CPU cooler before: don't touch it! You might ruin your motherboard and/or CPU!

I think it's connected to the motherboard by a click-system. So it's safe enough to change is myself?
(we organised a little festival this saturday on a grafitti-square here in antwerp with drinks, juices, food, lots of music&groups and.... Belgian Championship pc-throwing co-organised by PUC. I kid you not. If this fan-thing gets out of hand, we'll do the same festival next year and i swear i'll hit the f*cking policecopter with my pc.)

It's very easy to remove the CPU fan actually, but just make sure you don't scratch the CPU while doing it.
You have to insert a screwdriver into one of the hinges and push the hinge downwards and outwards.
There will probably be a manual on how to do this with your new fan.

Yup
There are a few types: some use cooling paste, which you have to put on the CPU, others have a special plate that gets pressed on the CPU, and you don't need the paste. This is supposed to be better (you have to renew the paste every now and then) but you have to do it right from the first time, or the plate is ruined and it won't make good contact witht he CPU. So if you have one of these, and you're not sure, ask someone who is.

I got a new fan (18dB) which is quite nice. I installed everything as it should, used a thin layer ofthermal paste, and everything fitted like a glove
Cpu temp = 50° now, but it can stand up to 90°.
So consider Operation Eskimo succesful.
Thanx for helping and giving the necessary details y'all!!
