'aight there? I plan on getting a new PC for Christmas (originally I wanted to get an Oberheim OB12; it's a beautiful-looking synth). This is because my current PC has A REALLY poor CPU/DSP (I'm using Reason), so it basically won't let me do much at all in terms of bangin' out tunes. So...
Either: what is a good PC to try to get? My budget is £300, or £400 if I'm lucky. *understand my pain, mother*
Or, what are the specifications that I should look for? I know that a RAM of 4GB is good... but I'm unsure as to processing speed and that.
Lastly.. feel free to write what PC you have!

you want be able to "pick up" much for that price m8.
but it depends on what operating system for want.
xp pro, win7, win7 64 bit
noticed i havent mentioned vista).
intell i7 processors are all the rage at the mo and dammed expensive too,
over a grand for the top of the range i7,
but you can get the top of the range i5 for a decent price.
double your budget n get a pc that you can "future proof"

Yeah, £400 isn't going to get you a very powerful machine.
My computer was about 1000€ (which is even more in pounds)
- and after that I had to buy a screen, the operating system (Windows XP Pro for me), a mouse, a keyboard and a soundcard!
I have an Intel Duo-Core CPU @ 3 GHz (can't remember the full name of it) and 4GB of RAM. And I'm very satisfied with this computer.

know the feeling..
I keep hitting CPU limits on my dual core machine which is coming up to 4 years old now..
I've Planned a new PC spec :
Zalman MS1000 HS2
Nexus NX-5000 R3 530W
ASUS P7P55D iP55 mobo
Core I7 860 2.8ghz
Noctua NH D14
OCZ 12gb RAM (3 x 4gb) DDR3 1333
Sapphire ATI HD5670 ULTIMATE 1GB DDR5
3x Samsung Spinpoint HD154UI ECO Green F2 1.5tb SATA
Plextor PX-B940SA BD-RE
Windows 7 64 bit Pro
Soundcard/Interface (tbc)
I figure this should keep me going for a while (3yrs+)
Got to finish the commix remix project first, and see what bonus I get from work..
Lots of things need buying for my house before the PC though...

The most expensive part is the OS. If you still have your disc and license sticker you can transfer the OS to your new computer and get a much more powerful one.
If your budget is small try to go for an AMD setup instead of Intel. They give more power for the same price.

Sounds like you paid over the odds for that amount of computer |
Couldn't find a matching computer for any cheaper anywhere in Finland.
And yeah this was well over a year ago, probably wouldn't have to pay that much anymore.

When it comes to terms of audio production you are going to want the fastest processor within your budget. RAM will only take you so far as a lot of the audio processing is done in (virtually) realtime. As someone stated eariler AMD processors will get you more bang for your buck and I would suggest from either Gateway or HP. I picked up my new PC a couple of weeks ago for roughly $830 USD, which is aprox. 600 Euros. My specs are:
HP Pavillion HPE-400y
OS: Windows 7 64bit edition
Processor: AMD Phenom II x4 (quad core) 945 processor each clocked at 3.0GHz with a FSB (front side bus) of 4000MHz (or 4.0GHz)
Memory: 8GB DDR3 clocked at 1033Mhz
Video Card: ATI Radeon HD 5450 with 512MB of DDR3
Hard Drive: 1TB
If you want to wait it out prices on computers drop rather quickly too and you can get a simular setup with about ~20% decrease in prices within a month or two. If you are computer savy you could just build your own PC but, somtimes that can be a headache for those with the know-how. Best of luck with your find bud and I am always open for computer questions as I am currently enrolled in college seeking a bachelor's degree in software engineering
