Please check out my new track 'Black Light' and post your comments here!
This is a minimal roller which was an exercise in creating a vibe from a concept and a technical exercise in making a minimal tune sound full and interesting.
I've had loads of help and advice in making this tune sound right.. my inital SC uploads of it sucked hard.
Thanks for BattleDrone and CloseProximity for pushing me to not give up and listen harder and to act on problems that arose. (and to BD for providing me the inspirational breaks in the first place via the .be samplepacks!
)
It's not perfect by any means, but I do feel happy to upload it here now, and have since replaced the file on SC. This is the current state of my ability..
My ears have struggled on this one and it's apparent I REALLY need to save for monitors and a sub.
i could get my groove on to this.
i can see this being played in some dark dungeon club 230 peeps max,
single strobe doing the occasional brief sharp scattering of light beams,
with a big moody gezzer in the corner wearing a puffer jacket knocking out wraps of mad man and dancing smarties.
the scene is set,
the bassline drops,
heads are a nodding,
feet are a shuffling even the big old boy wearing the jacket is in on the action,
jaws start to protrude hands are doing the obligatory dnb chopping motion,
clubs a rocking m8,
who's the dj?,
fuck nows,
who cares,
lets aaaaaaaaaave itttttttttttt.
i love the groove to this,
it kinda stalls then falls back into place,
much more interesting than over quantized 16ths.
more of this spectrasoul thing please m8.

extremely nice atmospherics - very eerie
good build up - the bass creepin in gently
kick sounds a tad too high in the mix in the intro perhaps
the snare is unusual in a good way its got a tasty finger click snap to it
2:48 love the variety of drummin comin in
youve made your sounds work hard for u in this one
Love the build from around 1:50 in. Great stereo arp. Intro before that might be a touch long. like the break & edits after 2:30. This could use some more mixing / EQing. A bit more bass, and rolling off the highs a touch, especially in the breaks. Overall, a huge fan of the minimalist movement LOL... less is more.
Very minimal just the way I like it. Kick drum has a tiny bit of a weird timing dont know if thats what u were going for. If it is then give me a little effect just before the kick so it doesnt sound abrupt. Bass is phat and the arpeggio sounds really interesting, could use a little more movement though, filters and effects automation. I like the name and especially Close Proximity's fictional post. 2:45 is cool with the drums and I like that synth sound you have coming up to it. I like this minimal vibe a lot I think the next track I work on is going to be minimal. Sounds design and mix overall works well. Can tell you put a lot of effort into this one and it shows. Keep producing!
Sounds like you're getting the roller vibe going. I think one of the main points that people will pick up on here is the main drum loop not being quite synchronised with the beat. An easy way of doing this is quantizing if you are using individual samples (in 1/16th notes) or if you are using a series of loops make sure they are exactly cut and stretched to the nearest bar, 2 bars, 4 bars etc. Apart from that the drums sit nicely in the mix - some of the drum edits later on are perfect rhythmically too. For not having monitors the bass is quite impressive! Keep doing your thing!
