I'm going to give you some advice, the kind you usually learn the hard way.
First of all, DON'T stick to the default samplepacks. They SUCK, and not in a good way. It's a good thing you're trying to cover a tune, but you start with reMAKING it, not remixing it. That way, you analyse the song in a way you normally wouldn't.
You try to make it sound just like the original, and then you add or remove some sounds you didn't like about it, instantly making your own version of it. THEN you can start shifting parts, fattening up some things that need to be fattened, ...
Make it good, make it funky.
I'm giving this a solid 2 though,
try to rebuild things, it'll help you understand more complex songs.
