One important thing to remember is that these elections are for the European council, not for local Belgium, so you have to vote for someone who is capable of representing Belgium on a European level.
IMO the parties who want to have a seperate representation for Flanders in the EU (like N-VA) are completely out of the question, would make matters worse for Belgium I think.

I also checked out a voting test and got Groen! - SPA - Spirit - Vivant as leaders, and the rest trailing behind, with N-VA and Vlaams Blok as big losers.

I'm now checking out all the top 4 parties' programmes. Groen is a bit too narrow minded, and they mess up too much internally. I like the ideas of Vivant for people that work in culture, they want to grant a basic income for musicians and other artists, but I don't know if this can be done on a European level.

Somehow I will try to figure out what exactly happens at the EU commission and what the Belgian representers have achieved up to now. I think it's going quite well with the EU so maybe we can keep the people there who have done a good job!

On D-Lux view which seems to be a bit contrary to the other people's ideas: I would *personally* never vote for CD&V because I don't like their repressive ideas, but a man like JL Dehaene is perfect to represent Belgium in the EU. The man got a lot of charisma and can really get his message across.

I just hope that nobody of the VB gets a seat in the EU, they can mess it up big time for us!!

OK I found some info including a list of the current members of the EU parliament on the site vrtkies.net

Here you can see the things the EP can do
Here is a list of the fractions which are in the EP. It seems like every country in Europe has gathered politicians with the same ideas in a big fraction that is representative for entire Europe. There is also a list here of all the people that are currently representing Belgium in the EP!! Very interesting.
Funny to see that the VB members could not find a place in a fraction and are sitting with the 5% independents. Guess their ideas are not so popular on a European scale Big Grin

Here are a couple of facts about the EP, it is told that only 31% of the members are women which is ofcourse way too low, let's all vote for women Big Grin

I usually vote for competence - not for sex... I find it very hypocritical that there are rules that at least X (%) women should be presented in politics - women are less interested in it in general... If maybe 25% of all active members in politic are women - it will already be a lot. Let's say that competence is more or less equally spread in both male side as female side (let's say 10% are "good" politicians). That leaves us with 2,5% competent women, and 7,5% competent men. These numbers are completely fictive - but it's a fact that there are a lot less women active in politics - or at least prepared to be electable - than men - who are generally more "carreer-driven".

I completely agree that there are equal rights for men and women, but in politics I see a lot of positive discrimination towards women. Each person individually - sex is irrelevant - should have the same rights and opportunities - and that is something that I don't like at all in "Groen!" - that they always pushed female candidates to top positions - just "to be different" - and didn't give their male compettitors (in the same party) the same chances (for which more than one "rel" was started inside the party).
If you look at it that way - individual chances and rights - yes - women will be less presented in politics - simply because of the lack of interest on female side. That's a simple fact. Actually, I find that if 31% of the representatives in the EP are female that that is already a lot... I don't think there are a lot of governements with 1/3'rd female representation...

This doesn't mean that there aren't any competitive female politicians - or incompetent male politicians that are electable, but voting for someone simply based on sex and party is a bit too short-sighted imho.

About Groen! pushing women purely since they're women... this all has to do with one man who thought he was THE man in the party... Luckely Jos has stepped back now, maybe things can go as they should now.

Exacly my thoughs. And even if a party doesn't have enough votes to participate, they still have influence, so your vote is never lost (unless you vote for some morons that are too extreme and no one listenes to them Wink
