A lot of the producers of that time used hardware samplers (Emu, roland, akai) and hardware synths like the Virus A or novation synths. Not sure on the specifics on RymeTyme tho.
Basically software just wasn't an option at that time. I used to have that timecode mix on cd but lost it at some point years ago...

Would you say that the... 'old skool' drum n' bass producers preferred samples over self-made synths, or vice versa? I don't know what's sampled, and what's self-made...
It's hard to say, only way you can really tell a sample from a synth is when you pitch it up and down and theres not much that going on in that track.
But I'm guessing they sampled a whole lot, since almost all of them used samplers. They might've had an AKAI computer for midi sequencing, directing the synths and samplers, and all coming into a single mixer (the mackie 8-bus is known as a legendary dance music desk from the 90's).
