I just found a good way to do this so I'll post how here.
First of all download these and load one as an effect.

Next route that mixer track to as many outputs as you need (2 for the 2 band splitter and 4 for the four band splitter) and disable the original track's master output. Then press the button on the effect that looks like a gear (wrapping settings), go to processing and change the outputs to 1, 2, 3 and 4.. If you're using the 4 band splitter that is, just 1 and 2 otherwise.
And that's it, simple really.
The good thing about this method is that you can make a sound null to silence by making a copy and reversing it's polarity, something I could never do using normal eqs and filters.

It works fine here, what version are you using? I think you need v9.

works with ableton too just gotta mess around to get the routing right,
although i was hoping for something with a little more umph,
but that might have been the sample i was testing in on.
