Well, I've decided that it's time to get some 'real' sounds goin' - so I want to get either a (preferably?) Roland or Korg synth, whichever make is good.
I'm looking at a £200-300 price range, and most likely secondhand; as it will be off eBay probably...

Your price range doesnt leave a huge selection available to you. But there are a few gems out there for relatively cheap.
Really depends what kinda sounds and synth you want...
Might be worth having a look at novation stuff. I got a K Station not so long ago, really like it. Its digital, not analogue, It's built pretty solid, can get some really big warm sounds from it, loads of fun to play around with..
There's one on ebay.co.uk for £50 at the moment, will probably go for £250 maybe....
Also might be worth having a look for Oberheim stuff on Ebay as well. Really really good sounds, not always so easy to program, but awesome sound at cheap prices. Matrix 1000 is probably worth a look. You need to use sys ex to make you own patches, although there are 1000 premade ones on there to get you started. I think these go for around £300
Oh, and maybe have a look at Yamaha DX/TX stuff, absolutely awesome FM bassed synths, again, tough to programme, but really awesome sounds.
Go for waay less than what theyre worth.

TechDiff, I totally agree. I was going to recommend a Novation Bass Station! They are fat. they give great wide bass when necessary and have plenty of great distortion options...
The K Station is also quite fat and feature rich... Great value for money and they don't hold their value well, so if you can pick up a second hand one, you're laughing....
On the other hand, you can pick the poor mans path for now, and get a software Novation Bass Station (VSTi)... It's pretty big...
ANd if you're going to pirate, well forget the old Novation stuff, and get Massive, or some of the cakewalk stuff.. (Dimension Pro; Rapture... They are AWESOME!)
But if you don't pirate, spend the $ on hardware if you can!

I have a microkorg These things are cheap. They are not analog but you can get some great basses out if it, just add distortion. Also the vocoder is great. It is the only synth I own that has editor software. I wish that they would make an editor that could be used as a vst to make it easier to program while using cubase.
I also own a vintage JX-3P and I love it. People say it isn't good for bass, that simply isn't true. I created a patch that has lots of low end. I don't have the programmer but do I really need it? It is easy to program using the edit buttons, slider.
I just bought a JX-3P as well, got it for $75 used but some of the buttons are broken. I haven't been tweaking it too much until I fixed it but even the preset sounds are really fat and usable.

I got a bass station rack, V good synth. and you can route another synth/sampler(whatever) through its filter section. Would recommend. But depends what kind of sound you are after. I also got a korg x5d which is good for atmospherics ect I got a kawai k1 mk2, akai+roland samplers.All which are good stuff, BUT they are (and have been for a while) boxed up in the attiic(loft). Since I started using soft synths pfff never looked back!
