So should I be ashamed that I use Reason?? Like being ashamed of a gay porn collection? haha

Being an FL Studio user used to be far worse... more like being ashamed of having a child porn collection Big Grin But things improved on the FL front and the FL flaming stopped more or less. Nowadays the shame has been reduced to Midget-getting-raped-by-horse kinda porn.

Exactly. As with all mature DAWs, I'd say. It's not the program, it's the musician/composer/producer.

Propellerhead's Reason has poor and limited possibilities according to sequencing, but has very good sampling technology implemented (keeping the timbre of the sound whil pitching it). Also, very easy to use, devices that let you keep on the focus of music production, such as many wiring possibilities too according to synthesis.
In comparsion, Cubase is far more easy to use than many other sequencers out there (in my opinion) with many tools and utilization aspects. Sampling technology is almost as great as DIGIDESIGN's Pro Tools and MOTU's Digital Performer.

huh bad sequencing?
In my opinion Reason is so easy to start off with, the rack is brill, and writing in notes and automation is pisss easy. Cubase just confuses me a bit

I suppose it would be good if there was like a sort of oscilloscope or something that could show which frequencies you're using though

I'd have to disagree on that, to be honest.
Reason has one of the most userfriendly sequencers out there.
I've tried Cubase, Ableton, FL, and more recently Nuendo.
I even tried getting my head around a tracker like Renoise, and I always came to the same conclusion: Reason is so much easier to work with.
It does what I want, when I want it. Something I couldn't say for Cubase or FL.
I do have to admit Nuendo has it's charm though...

I guess what it boils down to is personal choice.
If you take a long time Cubase user, and give him nothing but Reason to work with, he'll get lost in a myriad of ways, and vice versa.
Which is why we all have our preference of DAW, and such a wide spectrum of different "soundsets".
ie: A track made with Cubase and VST's will sound different if you remake it in Reason, etc etc...

Edit: Ciaran, you can make a spectrum analyser in a combinator yourself, if you want.
It's not exactly accurate, but it does help.
Check the JimmyC Combi pack in the samples section. Wink

me too .. i dont know what u mean really , cubass is really hard to use and reason is very simple with combi patches and the sequencer is the best thing about it , as its easy to get around unlike cubass !!

It all starts with the first DAW you really get into. I used to use a primitive tracker style program and could not get my head around a "left to right" editing program at first. Then I discovered FL studio and started messing with it, it took me months to get going. Now after years of producing I am totally hooked on it as "It does what I want, when I want it" like you said. When making music now I hardly notice my DAW, it's just there and does the job. I don't need to search "how to do this or that", I just focus on what I want to do.

I tried Reason (1.0, 2.0) and it was OK, but it's like learning a foreign language. No matter how hard you try, you'll never be able to express yourself as good in it as in your mother tongue.
The biggest issues I had with Reason were:
- the many things you "need to know" about it before you can produce hassle free (don't ask me what, as you can see from the versions I tried it was a few years ago).
- The user interface which involved a lot of scrolling up and down and looked pretty ADHD with it's screaming colors. I never used a hardware setup so the look of Reason which mimics a hardware rack (the wires on the back.... o come on) doesn't really help me, I prefer a layout that has it's focus on user comfort instead.

The 2 things about Reason that are unmatched by any other DAW are
- the possibility to carelessly collab with other people because you are all using a standard product.
- the concept of combinators which enables you to store/reuse/share very complex setups.
The latter is being picked up by FL studio lately, but the biggest drawback are VST's which cause both freedom and chaos.

I'm pretty sure that there are tons of producers out there that use it. Just like any decent DAW. For example: I heard on Bailey's 1Xtra show that Phace and Misanthrop use it.

I guess we're all at peace until someone says '__is the best music software'. don't do that...
for me Reason is initially straightforward - you get predetermined instruments, blah blah blah; but then you learn 'bout things in greater detail, such as synthesis; but hey that applies to all DAWs, right?
its a shame you can't get VSTs though; Propellerheads should make a version of Reason with the ability to use 'em. I use Reaktor and it'd be really cool to be able to integrate it with Reason... maybe some day, haha..

I agree, usually when you start out with your first DAW (or any other kind of software for that matter), it gives you a certain workflow and process which sticks.
If you try switching to different software that essentially does the same but with another workflow, you tend to get lost in the process.
For me, Reason was the first DAW I ever worked with, and I'm stuck (in a good way) with it.

I'm not sure what you mean by "things you need to know", but indeed, Reason isn't the easiest DAW to get into.
If you're used to working with hardware, it does feel familiar somehow.
The compulsive ADHD scrolling is something you learn to live with, but Propellerheads seem to have picked up on it when they released Record.
The new version of Reason, V6, has the ability to stack your rack both ways, which partially eliminates the need to scroll so much.

If you stick to the factory soundbanks you're using a standard product, but there is an enormous amount of custom refills out there, which give you enormous amounts of other possibilities.
In that aspect, when sharing or doing a collab, you'd have to export the patches if possible and send them together with your track.
That also where the option to self-contain samples comes in very handy, since that basicly gives you the whole thing in one single file.
As for combinators, they're bliss... I've got about 8000 selfmade patches stored, and they save me time and effort during the creative process.
The fact that you can use them for complex synths as well as complex FX is a bonus.

The whole DAW-war is something I've never really gotten into, I've tried several DAWs and I always resort to Reason because I just like the process.
When I made my first post in this thread, I was getting into Nuendo (to be able to use VSTs), and I love the power of it.
You'll never hear me say FL sucks, because I realise that it really doesn't matter what you use. It's what you do with it that matters.
