For me, producing is just a hobby I guess, but an important one. I don't delude myself into thinking that anyone would actually pay real money for my tunes. I certainly wouldn't.
But music is definitely a big part of my life and has been for at least 15 years. I grew up in a household that got me exposed to a lot of really good music. It defines who I am in many ways and definitely adds a lot of enjoyment to life. It's a real shame that there isn't more money in drum 'n' bass tho.
LOL @ whoever voted for 'I hate music'.

well i certainly would mate!!
yeah i suppose as halph said for some of us may not be as clear cut as picking one answer, for me i started off producing as a natural progression from DJin but never really took it seriously it was a hobby i couldn't even contemplate at that time makin music that would meet the ever growing standards.
however, when i joined dotbe and slowly started to learn more about producing it slowly turned more into an obsession and i've been taking it as serious as one can take a "passion" ever since
and too right Tomos, there is no money in dnb - unless u r at the top

Exactly. And the real bitch is that drum 'n' bass producers are some of the most talented musicians around. Drum 'n' bass artists have been constantly pushing back the boundaries of electronic music for well over ten years. In terms of both technical skill and creativity, drum 'n' bass is waay beyond most of the mindless shit that gets played on the radio, at the clubs and on TV.

couldn't agree with this more
thing is it tends to only be the producers who can vouch for this so i suppose its sumthin we're all left to (rightly) grumble about!
electro music seems to be catching up to dnb now, i hear stuff in there music that dnb has been doing for years now. like the digital degrade sound has caught on finally, i loved that from day one.
anyways, i went to school for it, and it's stayed more a hobby then a profession, which is sad.

can't write music if i cannot attain a meditative state. the more relaxed one is, the more creative one becomes. it's taken me a long time to find this out, and to understand what relaxation is. but to learn, one isn't always relaxed, but i find i do relax when i learn.

hobby and a fun one at that, sometimes becomes a slightly obsessive one when i try to push myself to make something better than my last and progress. as said before being in dnb for the money is just insane. im happy as long as people say good stuff about my music ( sounds kinda veign
) but to know that someone has a)listened and b) appreciated is the most improtant thing for me
