I've heard loads of clips of course, and I know a few melodies, but I've never actually sat down and listened to a whole tune (apart from Imagine).

there's much more interestng music than the beatles, they were just the first 'pop' band imo...
If you need some "popular ideas", listen to it...

Not my piece of cake really.
I just don't get it I guess.
The Rolling stones OK, James Brown VERY OK.

they were not the first pop band, and they would have just faded out if they stopped at 'help'. It wasn't their pop music that immortalized them. It was the experimental stuff after that did.
If you read any song book, EVERY SINGLE TECHNIQUE used in song writing there is an example of it in a Beatles song. This is what makes them so legendary. If you want to be a song writer, and all you listen to is the Beatles, you have all the tools you need.

I suggest you listen to Sgt. Pepper's ENTIRLY. these were designed as records, and so should be listened to from start to end. not on shuffle. you can find their entire discography online to enjoy. but if nothing else sgt. pepper's lonley hearts club band. it's got some fat beats, some cool riffs, some trippy melodies, some groovy rhythems, and it ends with Day in the Life of. that song will make you go WTF.
