I was checkin out the Survival Q&A on DOA earlier and noticed him say that for his basses he prefers using samples these days as they have more character, what does he mean, samples made by other people or his own sounds made in a synth then sampled?? I wouldnt have thought he was just rinsing samples from other producers off the net .
He also says later on that he rarely uses synths?? how can this be.. i dont understand at all.
Can anyone shed any light on these Comments? Hes a fucking awesome producer and i love his style, check out the Q&A for some good info

Yeah i kinda thought it sounded like cheating too (but then again i REALLY suck) Especially with the attitude on DOA towards using samples, every time anyone mentions samples (other than breaks) about ten people kick off shouting Make your fucking own original samples! lol

do what you do to make a tune as long as the sound is fresh dont matter where its come from
samples, synths, it dont matter where its from all that matters is how well they fit the tune imo

yeah i was gonna say that, surely if it gets the right result then i doesnt really matter how you get there, as long as it sounds good.

The best samples in the world don't exist because you can't mesure their quality, it all depends.
Prefering VST's over samples is simply dull. As long as you don't simply rip off other peoples tunes it is ok.
I know the DOA mentality... piss on sample users but how often do you see questions like "how to make this bass sound?" and how often does someone answer in the thread "just sample it"? It's all elitist wank.

I bet he uses his own as well as others' samples. and I can't see why he shouldn't use other's samples, as well as anyone else for that matter. if they're quality, I'd use them.
when I recognise a known sample in a tune, it somehow loses its quality, if it's used in a blatant and obvious way. BUT if it's used in a better-that-ever way and the tune is killer, then I would praise the sample usage regardless it's been already heard elsewhere.

I think a producer should know how to make the sounds he's sampling before he becomes too dependent on them.
