and which is better for streaming audio from an external hard drive?

Well firewire has a faster rate, but to be honest I use a USB1 interface (Yamaha Audiogram) and never had problems with it, it's enough for 44Khz/16bit.

So i suppose a USB2 interface should do the job pretty well.

firewire & USB are HEADER types

USB 1.0 etc... is a PROTOCOL

the transmission speed will depend on your protocol AND hardware (and OS, but heck, i'll try to talk human on this forum, and I'm quite sure you're using windoze 98 SE or higher Smile ...)

there are different protocols for firewire & USB

Use the latest drivers & protocols & hardware to get most out of your interface

Don't use external drives for audio production, unless it's eSATA or better...

USB & Firewire are wayyy to slow for stable recordings

I'd suggest a USB 2.0/3.0 or latest firewire protocol audio card + internal ATA or SCSI drive/ external eSATA drive

(and a striped-RAID will get you even more R/W speed...)

(and the RPM of the little DC-motor of the HDD will also decide a bit... check out Raptor from Western Digital)

And a nice built system off course Wink

The fastest way to stream music:

I guess UDP, or directly from RAM

LOL
