Try Maxiumus too. There's some nice defaults there and it's pretty easy to tweak.

depends what it's for. vocals, Voxengo Voxformer, or Spitfish for de-esser or floor fish for a nice gate, both of thoes are free.
psp compressor for quick good warm compressors.
pspSaturator for a bit of compression that deals with the softer instruments.
Blood Over drive and Fast dist for some quick warm. i usually mix it with wet/dry control
puit RYG's Analog Distortion from BuzzMachine if it needs some CRUNCH it's so crunchy.
