well, I know there's probably a website that'll have this stuff, but since i been reinstalling everything and making backups, i wanna help out some of you fools using NON-OPEN SOURCE. open source is coding for programs available to anyone, so there's a lot more people working on items, and a lot less malicious code and advertisement in them.
if you one of the many people converting to FireFox then you're using some open source stuff. FireFox is strong because it is open source.
I would compare it to getting a needle shot. when you download anything it injects from a .exe file. you have no idea what's in the syringe, the .exe. you assume it's what you'd except, like a vaccination or medicine. but you don't know.
open source you get the same program but since anyone can view the code, it shows you whats in there. if there was say, a hidden file in there that monitored which pages you viewed and sent them to 3rd party advertisers, you would find someone that edited that out of the program. it would be reviewed by peers, and be better.
there is a lot programs that work as well if not better then most programs you buy. mainly cuz there not in it to make lots of money and fill your computer with 3rd party advertisers.
for basic computers stuff:
MICROSOFT OFFICE ALTERNATIVE - http://www.openoffice.org/
INTERNET EXPLORER ALTERNATIVE - http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/
NERO CD BURNER ALTERNATIVE - http://infrarecorder.org/?page_id=5 (based off Mac computers BURN program)
for web pages there's some help:
WEBSITE DESIGN TEMPLATES - http://www.oswd.org/
FLASH MUSIC PLAYER FOR VIDEO AND MUSIC - http://developer.longtailvideo.com/trac/ (we could us it here.)
WEBSITE HOST NAME - http://www.dot.tk/en/index.html?lang=en (not really open source but free and works with the other items here)
for video games:
HI, I AM A PC, AND THESE ARE GAMES! - http://apcmag.com/top_5_best_free_open_source_games.htm
RESOURCE FOR MORE STUFF - http://sourceforge.net/
so i don't want this to be a debate about open source (start a new thread for that if you haven't read Wikipedia opinion on it,) just list anything else useful you found open source or any reviews on open source programs.
try to list what program it's a good alternative for.

Belgium is a monarchy!!
Open source is the future indeed, like Halph I suspect all software that is NOT open source, and avoid to use it if possible. I switched my laptop / website development machine over to Linux and it is running 100% open source software.
Some more nice open source programs for Windows users:
7zip - archiving / compression program, like WinZip and WinRar, compatible with just about every existing archive type
Audacity - audio / sample editor
Filezilla - FTP program
Pidgin - instant messenger
VLC - media player
KeePass - password vault
GCStar - movie collection organizer

other then less virus?
fast, better performance. a lot of errors you get with driver computability with xp, if they don't make a driver you're screwed on xp, with Linux someone out there int eh community probably made a driver for it and works flawlessly. for xp, it's illegal for someone to make a driver without the permission of the hardware company on xp.

never really understood linux, what the main benefits of it as to xp? |
In what respect? There are whole websites dedicated to this discussion lol
For me personally the main benefits to run linux on my laptop are:
- same platform as the dnbbe web server, much easier to work on the site, this was a nightmare on xp, now I can run an exact copy of the site on my laptop, and change things without danger of damaging the site
- runs web development apps, web server and databases much easier than on windows
- much more choice in development programs
- multiple workspaces (the one thing I miss most whenever I am working on my xp desktop pc)
- update system is incredible, ALL programs are updated automatically every day
- installing software is incredibly easy, you never have to visit a website to download anything, just search in a list of software and click on it
- there is an idiotically large amount of software available for it, and it's all free
- source code is available, this is a major bonus if you know a bit about programming, found some hidden features in programs sometimes, and made some minor but useful alterations to some pieces of software
- when you turn desktop effects on it looks amazing too lol, very impressive, very polished
I started using it because Vista was driving me insane, and am very pleased with it. Am thinking about moving my main computer to linux too, and just keep a small XP partition for audio apps and games.
Oh and yeah it is much more secure than xp, but that is of no importance to me since I'm an advanced computer user and don't even need run an anti virus on my xp
