New stuff has much more high end and sounds more crispy, probably due to the prominence of software over hardware and mixing boards...
older stuff uses plain break loops with less layering in there...
older is slower..
has more edits in the drum loops
less emphasis on quality of production
I agree with this totally.
Although I think a lot of the older tunes perhaps had less edits in the breaks?? I think break editing is more complex now than it was then, due to the simplicity and ease of doing it in software or with programs such as recycle or other beat slicers and graphical MIDI editing.
New DnB also has these breaks with only hihat ghost bits which leave a lot of room for melodic elements. Old Dnb had mostly breaks with snares in the ghost bits which didn't leave a lot of room for melodic elements and thus focused on the basslines and some sparse pads or FX.

@ Yawn - the way i see it in terms of edits, if u listen to some jungle there used to be a lot more complexity than a standard dnb beat today (in terms of variations) but i suppose breakcore is still going strong and u get loads of mad variation in those kinda tunes still
yeah totally, in those old jungle tunes, they would chop and re-sequence the hell out of an amen and it probably has more variations than a lot of today's today's tunes.
I was just really referring to that kind of classic kick-snare hardstep where the beat consisted of not much more than a kick, snare, hi-hat, ghost and ride, where it was pretty much just stompin' the all the way through. Listen to 'Kombat' by Dylan for a perfect example
Dylan-Kombat The uploader has pitched this up big time.....it's waaaaaaaaay slower than that.
" rel="nofollow">Trace do not adjust your speakers...this isn't a low quality mp3 this is exactly how it is on the vinyl, mate of mine had this and it's really rough production...some would say shit
but I say its got a certain 'je ne sais quoi'

Just love the breakdown on 'Kombat', tookme right back man.
After listening to the whole tune i started going through tracks on youtube, ending up going through almost every bad company upload on full volume, wicked!!
Although the mrs didnt approve-lol!
Two tunes really stand out as milestones in my past
1. Bad Company - 4 Days
2. Moving Fusion - The beginning. This tune sends shivers down my spine, mainly due to the memories attached to it.
Speaking of Moving Fusion, i forgot to add their track 'Sex Drive' to my all time favourite list, i would've sold my grandmother for a copy of that track at the time!!
Dont know what happened to them after that period though, bought their 'The Start Of Something' EP but was not impressed at all, it had a much cleaner sound that i just wasnt feeling..

I know why it does that. Chron needs to fix up his smilies because eight followed by an o gives you a
smiley. When this is part of a hyperlink it fucks up

I remember playing that in my moms car at like 14 and fukn loving it. EZ Rollerz also and tons of Ed Rush & Optical, Ram Trilogy, Konflict, AK1200...tunes like that
old songs were longer. new stuff it mixes in a drop and it seems like the songs are like 2-3 minutes long now. depending on the dj. but you don't hear the full length of songs go past 5 minutes if it's new mixes. it's like that for most every dj now, but with that you also get to hear a lot more great tracks and it's none stop fun, instead of listening to WRRRORROR WRRRORROROR repteated 16 times.
