I'm about halfway through a lecture series called "How to Listen to and Understand Great Music" By Robert Greenberg. It is produced by The Teaching Company.

The lectures go through the history of Western music, discussing the great composers and how their compositional decisions reflected their own beliefs and the nature of their times. Honestly I never enjoyed classical music but after learning what to look for I find it completely fascinating. This course connected me with music in a way I never felt before, and I'm seriously considering transferring to a music program because of it.

I know many of the folks on this forum are primarily interested in drum and bass and related genres but do yourself a favor, check it out, and you may find a lot of elements that can broaden and benefit your compositional range.
